Job Description:

The College of Science at Weber State University invites applications for a tenure-track position starting Fall 2026. We seek a broadly trained candidate with passion for teaching and expertise in bioinformatics. The successful candidate will be hired as an assistant professor into the department that best matches their research and teaching expertise, and will support the development of an interdisciplinary program in bioinformatics. To support this initiative, Weber State has robust undergraduate programs in the life and physical sciences which focus on providing hands-on research experiences. This position represents a strategic collaboration between the College of Science and the School of Computer Science, ensuring our graduates develop the data analysis and computational skills essential for success in modern and future biological research and industry. This new program will build upon existing curriculum in the Departments of Microbiology, Botany and Plant Ecology, Zoology, Earth and Environmental Science, and Physics and Astronomy. The Department of Mathematics and the School of Computer Science also provide an interdisciplinary Master of Data Science degree. The successful candidate would be expected to work collaboratively across the College of Science and University.

Job Duties:

The position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level. Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate courses in bioinformatics, biology, microbiology, genomics, proteomics, biochemistry, data analysis, or other areas as needed by the department. A typical teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester, including lower- and upper-division classes and labs.
  • Establishing and maintaining a research program in bioinformatics that involves the mentorship and training of undergraduates.
  • Serving the Department, University, and community. This may include academic advising of students, developing new programs or courses, serving on College and University committees, or providing outreach to the community.

Required Qualifications:

Required:

  • A Ph.D. in Bioinformatics or a closely related field, with applicable research experience. ABD candidates who expect to complete a Ph.D. by the beginning of the Fall 2026 semester will also be considered.
  • Evidence of teaching experiences and an interest in using innovative, evidence-based teaching strategies.
  • Evidence of experience conducting high-quality research and mentoring undergraduate researchers.

  • Research expertise that will complement existing strengths of the programs involved with the bioinformatics program.
  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Ability to build connections within the University as well as local industries, government agencies, or community organizations
  • Successful at obtaining external funding sources to support scholarship and/or undergraduate research.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements of this position: Light work. Exerting up to 20 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Use of arm and/or leg controls exerting forces greater than that for sedentary work.

Visual Acuity Requirements including color, depth perception and field of vision: Required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; using a computer terminal; extensive reading.

The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position: None. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
