Job Description
The Department of Visual Art and Design (DOVAD) at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, seeks a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Graphic Design. The position includes a full-time undergraduate teaching load of 12 credit hours per semester, typically three courses per semester.
We seek an innovative designer and educator with a strong record of professional practice and scholarly work that advances the field of Visual Communication Design. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, creative practice, and research and is expected to contribute to curriculum development at the undergraduate level. This involves cultivating student abilities in critical problem-solving, ethical design leadership, and effective communication across evolving media platforms.
As part of our faculty, the successful candidate will help cultivate a dynamic learning environment while advancing the departments growing influence in visual culture, technology, and public engagement. Program Information
The Graphic Design program is an essential part of the DOVAD at Weber State University, a certified Adobe Creative Campus. Offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Graphic Design (https://www.weber.edu/majors/graphic-design.html), the program prepares students for the evolving field by emphasizing emerging content structures and technologies. Faculty actively mentor students through academic advising and professional development opportunities.
Faculty have strong support through research and professional development grants, as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, especially via the Matthew S. Browning Design Lab. Additionally, Weber State supports research via the ACT Lab, a multimedia workshop with a focus on innovation at the intersection of art and technology, and DOVAD maintains a Digital Lab for large-scale printing and digital illustration.
Job Duties
The successful candidate will teach core courses, including upper and lower division typography, branding, and layout along with system design and portfolio development, alongside art foundations, general education, and graphic design curriculum courses. They will also contribute to our curriculums focus on community-based design and studio practice.
DOVAD seeks candidates whose teaching and professional practice demonstrate a commitment to a forward-thinking, human-centric, and socially engaged design approach.
The candidate is expected to maintain active professional practices through public lectures, workshops, exhibitions, publications, client work, or other relevant venues, and also participate in service to the Art Department, College, and University.
Required Qualifications
- A terminal degree (MFA, PhD, or equivalent) in Graphic Design or a closely related field is required by July 1, 2026.
- Adobe Program knowledge.
- A minimum of one year of teaching experience.
- A portfolio of creative work in graphic design.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years of professional or industry experience.
- An understanding of some combination of the expanding digital tools necessary for the field of graphic design:
- AI
- Augmented Reality
- Motion Design
- 3D Modeling Software
- Animation

DOVAD is housed in the Ethel Wattis Kimball Visual Arts Center, one of the most comprehensive studio arts facilities in the Intermountain West. The department is also home to the Mary Elizabeth Dee Shaw Gallery, which produces and mounts exhibitions of national and international scope, in addition to showing student works and works by regional artists. Weber State University is located in Ogden, Utah, home to The Monarch and Nine Rails Creative District. The City of Ogden is 35 miles north of Salt Lake City. Northern Utah, the site of the 2002 and 2034 Winter Olympics, provides many world-class outdoor recreational opportunities.

Required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; using a computer terminal; extensive reading.
