POSITION DETAILS

The Office of Student Affairs within Central Office at the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks a dynamic and student-centered manager to facilitate and manage the operational, education programming, and community-building initiatives within CUNY’s residence life portfolio.

Reporting to the University Director for Student and Residential Life, the University Residence Life Manager plays a key role in enhancing the student experience by developing inclusive living-learning environments and supporting students’ academic, personal, and social success across university-sponsored housing options, both on and off-campus. The University Residence Life Manager will work collaboratively with campus leaders, faculty, and staff to implement policies and programs that promote student engagement, leadership development, cultural understanding, and community responsibility.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview information, other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Develop and implement inclusive and engaging residential programs that foster belonging, community engagement, and student development.
  • Manage the coordination and planning of social, educational, and cultural activities for student residents that support their academic success and personal growth.
  • Support first-year transition and orientation programs tailored for residential students.
  • Provide guidance, referrals, and conflict mediation to support student well-being and community standards.
  • Oversee housing assignments, occupancy management, and administrative systems in coordination with campus housing partners.
  • Manage staff, and work closely with student staff on recruitment, training, supervision, and ongoing development.
  • Develop and revise residence hall policies and procedures in line with best practices and university regulations.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and critical incidents as needed.
  • Maintain open and timely communication with students, staff, faculty, and campus partners.
  • Collaborate with academic and student support departments to integrate co-curricular learning and programming in the residence life setting.
  • Represent Student Affairs in university-wide committees and working groups focused on residential student issues.
  • Manage fiscal resources related to residence life programming, operations, and student staff development.
  • Maintain accurate records and generate reports to support strategic planning and assessment efforts.
  • Assist with crisis response, safety initiatives, and student conduct processes as appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

NOTES: Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required to support programming and respond to emergencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM

Bachelor's degree and six years’ related experience required.

PREFERRED

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related discipline.
  • At least four years' of progressively responsible experience in residence life or university housing.
  • Experience managing student staff and developing training and programming focused on student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Familiarity with working in an urban higher education environment and with diverse student populations.
  • Strong knowledge of student development, residence life best practices, and risk management in student housing.
  • Schedule flexibility in responding to and managing student crises and critical incidents, including on-call responsibilities after hours.
  • Proficiency with Office 365 and collaboration tools such as MS Teams and Zoom, as well as administrative and housing software platforms.
  • Knowledge of federal and state housing laws, including Clery Act compliance, FERPA, and safety regulations related to student housing.

Manages the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of student programs and quality of life issues, promoting the personal development of a diverse student population.

  • Evaluates student needs and trends to develop a range of student services
  • Develops and administers specific programs and general activities in support of student needs
  • Develops relationships with college departments and outside community organizations to understand student needs and available development opportunities
  • Represents the College in campus-wide and university-wide groups and councils focusing on priority student issues
  • Manages staff, fiscal resources, and facilities supporting student affairs activities
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

FLSA: Exempt

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary range is $87,978 - $102,485, commensurate with credentials, education, and experience.
