Dominican University New York seeks a dynamic and entrepreneurial candidate for the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean. The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean reports directly to the President. The VP for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean acts as the Chief Academic Officer of the University and is responsible to lead and oversee all academic activities and programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Direct and indirect supervisory responsibilities include all full-time and part-time faculty, academic administrators and academic support staff.

Qualifications

  • An earned doctoral degree from an accredited university in an appropriate field and a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible administrative experience in academic affairs, with broad experience in strategic program planning and implementation, outcomes assessment, workforce and integration of information technology for academic programs. Experience with micro-credentialing and workforce development preferred.
  • The ideal candidate should have superior interpersonal and communication skills, collegial leadership, computation/analytical skill, group-process facilitation, resolution of personnel-related issues. Knowledge of norms and standards in higher education, faculty prerogatives and responsibilities, accreditation and program development processes, student rights and legal implications of institutional actions and have a broad familiarity with the current issues facing small similar universities. Experience with New York State Higher Education preferred.
  • Possess a strong and well-articulated academic vision, with a commitment both to the fundamental role of the liberal arts and to high quality professional curricula at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Have experience in preparing proposals seeking grant funding from government agencies, private foundations, and corporations.

Responsibilities

  • The Vice President for Academic Affairs will serve as a member of President’s Cabinet and will provide leadership and supervision of the faculty and oversee the effective and efficient operation of all academic areas, including Program/Division chairs, Academic Advising, and an array of academic support systems, including the Registrar, Academic Success Center, New Student & Transition Center, Office of Special Services, Office of Retention, and Library services.
  • Develop and monitor implementation of an academic strategic plan that includes performance objectives, key initiatives and outcomes. Integrate academic planning and operations with University systems, e.g. institution-wide strategic plan, budget, and accreditation processes.
  • Provide leadership to ensure compliance with state registration and national accreditation standards.
  • In collaboration with Program and Division Directors, lead and oversee curricula development, implementation of academic policies, program assessment practices, faculty and student performance, promotion and succession planning, accreditation, and internal academic auditing procedures.
  • Participate with Program and Division Directors in recruiting, interviewing, and selecting outstanding and diverse faculty and academic staff for academic positions. Analyze staffing needs and compensation levels and makes recommendations to the President. Authorize compensation for all part-time faculty appointments and full-time overload assignments.
  • Approve recommended course offerings and assignments of instructors in divisions and disciplines and coordinates the planning of the academic calendar and schedules with the Registrar and the Directors of the University’s nontraditional and graduate programs.
  • Provide guidance and leadership as ex-officio member of all faculty committees and as active regular committee member of the Committee on Academic Standards, the Committee on Promotion and Tenure, the Faculty Affairs Committee, and the Curriculum Committee.
  • Work effectively with members of the Board of Trustees regarding academic developments within the University through the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board.
  • Provide academic oversight for articulation agreements with local community and other four-year Universities.
  • Build relationships with education and community leaders and maintains knowledge of critical educational policy issues and innovations.
  • Adjudicate and act on student academic issues, such as grade appeals and requests for special permissions forwarded by the Assistant Academic Dean; works to ensure appropriate implementation of University policies and processes.
  • Within University budget provisions, review and determine support for faculty development activities, special academic events, and other proposed uses of University resources.
  • Serve as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, Master Plan Committee, and Budget Committee.

Salary $190,000 (Will adjust depending on experience)
