"Visiting Assistant Professor -Film Studies & Gender, Sexuality, & Intersectional Studies"

The Film Studies Department and the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Intersectional Studies invites applications for a one-year, jointly appointed, non-tenure-track position at the Visiting Assistant Professor level effective July 1, 2026, with the possibility of extension.

Qualifications: An earned Ph.D. in Film or Media Studies with a certificate in Gender or Women’s Studies or a specialization in Gender, Feminist, or Sexuality studies is preferred; ABD candidates will also be considered. We seek a colleague who can teach Introduction to Film, two sections of the introductory GSIS 103 course, and two courses cross-listed in both departments, totaling three fall courses and two spring courses. Existing cross-listed courses include: Intersectional Identities in American Film and Media, Queer and Trans Film and Media, Afrofuturism, Film Feminisms, Black Women Filmmakers, Feminisms and American Popular Culture, among others.  The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of vibrant undergraduate teaching, inclusive pedagogical practices, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to an academic environment that fosters learning and growth for all students.

The Departments of Film Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Intersectionality Studies seek candidates whose research and teaching focus on representations of intersectional identities in contemporary moving image culture, especially work intersecting race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and the industries that construct and inform those representations.  We encourage contributions to the study of moving image culture outside of the United States, especially cultural products from non-European and Indigenous populations.  The ideal candidate will have an understanding of film and its transformation as it has moved into different platforms (including video and digital media), as well as its varied experiences within a range of socio-cultural contexts.

We emphasize a strong theoretical and praxis focus in our curricula and research. Our departments’ cultures support the cultivation of rich intellectual collaboration both within the department and outside of it, and offer ample opportunities for pedagogical creativity and development. We are invested in pedagogy that supports and enhances our students’ media, visual, technological, and information literacies through the close textual analysis of a varied range of moving image representations and works. We value teacher scholars whose work foregrounds social transformation and community engagement. Visiting faculty are invited to actively engage with their departments and all aspects of campus life during the course of their appointment. Visiting faculty are initially participating members of the faculty and voting members in their second and subsequent years; their presence is welcome at all faculty meetings.

Salary Range: $58,000 - $62,000
