"Visiting Assistant Professor or Instructor of Archaeology"

The Carleton College Archaeology Program invites applications for a visiting position for the 2026-2027 academic year. This is a one-year, 0.67-time position, which will begin September 1, 2026. Candidates will ideally have a Ph.D. in hand by the start-date of the position (to be hired as a Visiting Assistant Professor). However, ABD candidates will also be considered (and would be hired at the rank of Visiting Instructor). This position will involve teaching four courses during Carleton's three academic terms (Fall, Winter, and Spring). We prefer to arrange those courses so that they are spread across all three terms, but a visitor teaching in only two terms (with two courses per term) may also be considered.

We seek candidates who have demonstrated a capacity for strong undergraduate teaching, engaged scholarship, and cross-disciplinary thinking. While the candidate will be based in the Archaeology Program, we are particularly interested in candidates whose courses would also be appropriate contributions to (some of) the following departments and programs: Sociology and Anthropology; American Studies; Latin American Studies; History; Environmental Studies; and Digital Arts and Humanities. Applicants’ general area of specialization should be the Western Hemisphere, though there is some flexibility in particular course offerings. Teaching responsibilities may include the following courses:

• ARCN 112: The Archaeology of North America (a broad survey offered at the introductory level)
• A methods course in an area of the candidate’s specialization (e.g., ceramics analysis, lithics, bioarchaeology, geoarchaeology, archaeogenetics, etc.).
• A cultural-historical course in an area of the candidate’s specialization (e.g., the ancient Maya, Caribbean archaeology, the archaeology of the Arctic, the Pacific Northwest, Mississippian culture, the US Southwest, the Amazon, etc.). Ideally this would not replicate regular offerings in the Andes, but may focus on other aspects of South American archaeology or any aspect of North American archaeology.
• A thematic/theoretical course with a global remit (e.g., ancient cities, empires, writing systems, colonialism, etc.)

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $49,200 - $52,460. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
