Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time one-year position of Visiting Instructor of Statistics or Visiting Assistant Professor of Statistics (rank dependent on highest degree earned) in the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics to begin August 15, 2026. The department anticipates searching for a full-time tenure-track position during the 2026-27 academic year, subject to budget approval.

Applicants must have current authorization to work in the United States. Gustavus will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position.

Position Overview

• Teach 7 course sections over the academic year. Typically, 3 in the Fall and 4 in the Spring. Two of the sections in Fall and Spring will be the same course. Additionally, all assigned courses will be taught with the mentorship of another statistics faculty member. Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory statistics and 200-level applied courses in statistical computing, regression, and/or design of experiments.

Prerequisites

What We're Looking For

• MS in Statistics/Biostatistics/Data Science or related field (PhD preferred)
• Experience with R/RStudio

• Evidence of effectiveness in teaching
• Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate students
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities
• Prior experience teaching introductory statistics
• Experience teaching utilizing R/RStudio

What We Offer

Based on data from AAUP (American Association of University Professors) and CUPA (College and University Professional Association), we offer a competitive starting salary range of $60,000 to $67,000 for a 9-month academic year. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience, training, certifications/licensure, market factors, departmental budgets, and responsibility. Department Information

The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics offers majors in Mathematics, Mathematics Teaching, Computer Science, and Statistics and graduates an average of 35 students per year. Among the 9 faculty, the department is home to three statisticians with varied research interests. In addition to the statistics major, the statistics minor is popular with students across campus, including those majoring in Economics, Finance, Management, Biology, Psychology and others. It is the philosophy of the Department that the skills of analytical thinking and logical argument, combined with the ability to communicate effectively, form the core of a solid liberal arts education in the mathematical sciences.
