Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion the Welder Fabricator Tech II is responsible for performing fabrication shop support duties related to the manufacturing and fabrication shop. Performs setup, alignment, and tack weld of fabricated metal products prior to final "weld out" as well as completed weld operations. Responsibilities include but are not limited to; preparation of bonding, trimming, and drilling of various types of composites and metals. Joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding technique; such as retrieving parts/materials, trimming finished products and inspects completed welds to determine structural soundness. Interprets, selects, adapts, and applies appropriate assembly guidelines, procedures and practices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As Essential personnel you must be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned, such as shoveling, salting, etc. Maintenance Technicians are essential to the overall success of Liberty University and its day-to day functions, especially during ongoing campus events such as, Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, CFAW and Summer Camps, amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year. Available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
  • Must be able to work 1st or 2nd shift, and must be able to be on a 7 day, "Available to work," rotation as needed.
  • Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the welder Fabrication Supervisor and/or Welder Fabricator Tech III.
  • Interprets specifications, drawings, blueprints, shop work orders and process sheets.
  • Performs work in a safe and efficient manner using appropriate PPE under the university's safety program.
  • Performs welding functions as needed using standard welding techniques to include, but not limited to, Stick, TIG, and MIG, and brazing; opperates other power equipment as needed.
  • Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Designs and constructs templates and fixtures, using hand tools.
  • May make sketches and rough layouts, record and analyze data, make calculations and estimates, and report their findings to the supervisor.
  • Reviews drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences. Knowledge of blueprint designs and technical specifications required.
  • Must provide own hand tools to perform and complete trade related tasks.
  • Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and leading industry performance benchmarks.
  • Willingness to learn operation of plasma table, CAD software, and other shop equipment.
  • Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
  • Must be able to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily/evening hours.
  • Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's Christian model and Mission - "Training Champions for Christ."
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 2+ years' experience required.
  • Must be able to pass MIG, TIG, Stick welding test.
  • Must provide proof of welding certification upon interview or obtain welding certification within one year of hire date.
  • Must have previous fabrication experience/skills.
  • Sheet metal experience is preferred.
  • Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer reimburses back to the University Upon voluntary termination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Computer skills: basic computer skill are required.

  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
Physical and Sensory Abilities
  • May be required to travel about campus, off campus and other areas for training as needed.
  • May be required to sit to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak effectively to communicate orally.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 75 or fewer pounds.
Work Environment
  • The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting, is well lit, and the noise level is moderate. Working environment may include facilitation of events outdoors occasionally on ground, off platforms and on roofs as needed, in all climates.
  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
Driving Requirements

If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the use of one's personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel. Proof of a valid driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee's position.
