Position Highlights

The Senior Workplace Access Consultant is an integral member of the Disability Resource Center's (DRC) Workplace Access team at the University of Arizona and serves as a primary resource for employees, departments, and University personnel regarding workplace accommodations and access. This role applies University policy as well as federal and state disability and employment law, including the ADA Amendments Act and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, to evaluate accommodation requests, determine reasonable accommodations, and support an effective interactive process.

In this capacity, the Consultant collaborates closely with employees and supervisors to identify disability-related barriers within the work environment and recommend appropriate modifications or accommodations. The role includes researching essential job functions, applicable policies, and best practices in order to provide well-founded guidance and clearly documented decisions. The Consultant also serves as a subject matter resource on workplace access and Universal Design, partnering with campus stakeholders to enhance accessibility and inclusive practices across University employment environments.

Duties & Responsibilities

Workplace Access & Accommodation Services:

  • Review documentation and determine eligibility for accommodations under ADAAA and PWFA.
  • Lead the interactive process with employees, supervisors, and relevant parties.
  • Conduct on site assessments as needed.
  • Develop and coordinate reasonable accommodation plans.
  • Prepare professional written determinations and maintain confidential records.
  • Consult with the Associate Director on complex cases.
  • Communicate effectively with Human Resources, General Counsel, and University leadership.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistent service delivery.

Consultation, Training & Collaboration:

  • Provide consultation to departments on accommodations, access, and Universal Design.
  • Deliver training on disability and workplace accommodations.
  • Coordinate with HR, Risk Management, and other units on disability related issues.
  • Maintain strong working relationships across the University.
  • Collect service data and prepare periodic reports.
  • Participate in committees, work groups, and professional development.
  • Stay current on disability related laws, issues, and scholarship.
  • Participates in special projects as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of Disability Studies and Universal Design.
  • Knowledge of disability and access issues.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws regarding access for people with disabilities, including the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Understanding of equitable hiring and workplace practices.
  • Knowledge of accessibility tools and processes.
  • Ability to gather information, interpret laws/policies, and resolve conflict.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive conversations, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree related to disability, employment, law, human services, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters, Doctorate, or JD in a related field.
  • Experience with disability access or institutional equity in higher education.
  • Experience meeting with individuals one-on-one to gather relevant information, explain policies or processes, and develop solutions.
  • Experience interpreting, explaining and applying laws and/or policies.
  • Experience interpreting and applying the Americans with Disabilities Act and other access or equity related laws/policies.
