We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's student body as a Lecturer I of the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs in mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. In addition to serving its own majors, the School supports the entire university by providing developmental and introductory courses in mathematics and statistics to more than 10,000 students each semester across hundreds of course sections. SMSS is a multi-campus unit, with faculty and programs located in Edinburg and Brownsville; this position is based on the Brownsville campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

M.S. in Mathematics or Statistics from an accredited university

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:

All faculty at UTRGV are required to exhibit a commitment to Teaching Excellence. Candidates must show experience and qualifications that departmental/college accreditation requires.

Teaching: The primary responsibility of Lecturers considered for this position is teaching and collaborating with colleagues to enhance student success in undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses. Lecturers are expected to participate in professional development in teaching to implement innovative teaching and learning strategies in the classroom and to document their impact to increase the success of first-year college students, including those who are not yet considered college-ready. Use of effective activities/pedagogy in the classroom is essential to engage students, cultivate thinking skills, and motivate interest in the subject. Faculty will be expected to integrate innovative technology and customized learning to maximize student success. Given that UTRGV is a distributed campus, faculty may be required to teach online, hybrid courses, and/or at different locations.

Service and Scholarship: Although the primary obligation of lecturers is classroom instruction and student engagement, service to the university and community may be a part of the faculty members' responsibilities. This position does not provide any formal expectation or support for scholarship activities. However, UTRGV encourages all faculty, including Lecturers, to engage in scholarship.

Preferred Qualification:

Ph.D. or terminal degree in the field of study with extensive teaching experience and documented teaching effectiveness at a university or college campus.

Teaching Statement (max 10 pages with topic headings) Provide a portfolio highlighting coordinated course experience, pedagogical approaches and materials, assessment strategies, instructional technology used and its application, and evidence of student engagement. Include sample syllabi and representative teaching artifacts where applicable.

Multimedia - Instructional Video Submission Submit a 3-5 minute video (via a private, viewable link) describing what a typical freshman-level mathematics class session looks like in your course. This should include your instructional approach, classroom structure and flow, student engagement strategies, and how you support learning. The video should not be a lecture or content demonstration. You may record using any device and post it on any platform (e.g., Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Zoom, or unlisted YouTube). Ensure the link is private, accessible without login, and remains active for the review period. Include the link in a document titled "Other document."

Additional Information:

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

Please Note: Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
