Academic Advisor (HEA) - Division of Science
POSITION DETAILS
The Division of Science at The City College of New York (CCNY) seeks an Associate Director for Academic Advising to support undergraduate student development, academic advising, and enrichment initiatives across the Division. The Associate Director will provide specialized advising and program coordination for students pursuing majors within the Division’s five departments as well as those preparing for pre-health and pre-engineering pathways.
CCNY serves one of the most diverse student populations in the nation, with many students being the first in their families to pursue a four-year degree. The Associate Director plays a key role in advancing the Division’s commitment to student success, access to STEM careers, and participation in research and professional development opportunities. Working closely with faculty, advisors, and program staff, the Associate Director helps guide students in developing academic plans, engaging in research experiences, and preparing for graduate or professional study in science, engineering, and health professions.
The Associate Director reports to the Director of CCAPP and collaborates with faculty and staff across the Division of Science and other campus units that support student success.
Campus-specific Information and duties
- Provide academic advising and degree planning for undergraduate students in the Division of Science, as well as students preparing for pre-health and pre-engineering programs.
- Guide students in course sequencing, prerequisite completion, and long-term academic planning aligned with graduate or professional school goals.
- Serve as liaison for DegreeWorks and assist faculty advisors and students in monitoring degree progress and academic milestones.
- Coordinate student success initiatives, including tutoring programs, peer mentoring, and academic support services.
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise tutors, peer mentors, and student assistants who support academic success initiatives within the Division.
- Direct and coordinate the program’s Pre-Freshman Summer Program, including hiring, supervising, training team leaders and instructors, and program activities.
- Organize student leadership and engagement initiatives, including supervision of the CCAPP Student Advisory Board.
- Coordinate undergraduate research activities and professional development opportunities, including student conference participation and poster presentations
- Maintain communication with faculty, staff, and campus partners regarding advising programs, student progress, and academic support initiatives.
- Assist with strategic initiatives that support student retention, research participation, and STEM pipeline development, and assume responsibility for program operations in the absence of the Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 6 years' related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree preferred in a STEM field, higher education administration, counseling, or a related discipline.
- Experience advising students in STEM disciplines, pre-health pathways, or pre-engineering programs.
- Familiarity with CUNY systems such as DegreeWorks, CUNYfirst, or similar student information systems.
- Experience coordinating tutoring programs, peer mentoring initiatives, or academic enrichment programs.
- Experience in academic advising, student success programming, or higher education administration.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and diverse student populations.
