Overview

Under the supervision of the Associate Director, Public Safety Systems & Services, the Access Control and ID Systems Manager supports the mission of the Department of Public Safety by leading and advancing campus access control and identification systems. This role provides operational and strategic oversight of physical and logical security systems that regulate access for students, faculty, staff, and authorized visitors.

The Manager oversees badge and credentialing systems, access control technologies, and associated software platforms to ensure secure, reliable, and compliant operations across the University. The position is responsible for policy development, system auditing, staff training, and continuous improvement of access control processes. This role also leads and supervises access control technicians and external contractors responsible for system programming, maintenance, and support.

  1. Access Control System Management: Oversee the administration, configuration, and maintenance of access control hardware and software, including card readers, scanners, gates, and credentialing systems.
  2. Policy and Procedure Development: Develop, implement, and maintain access control policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure compliance with University standards and security best practices.
  3. Monitoring and Auditing: Review access activity logs, conduct routine audits, and generate reports to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  4. Team Leadership and Development: Supervise, train, and mentor Access Control staff, fostering a culture of accountability, service excellence, and continuous learning.
  5. Incident Response and Troubleshooting: Respond to system outages, equipment failures, and access-related incidents, coordinating timely resolution and documentation.
  6. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Information Technology, Facilities, Public Safety leadership, and external vendors to maintain system integrity and support campus-wide security initiatives.
  7. Access Scheduling and Lifecycle Management: Manage electronic access schedules for academic year, summer, and holiday periods, ensuring timely activation and deactivation aligned with University needs.
  8. Understand and oversee each Public Safety system including but not limited to: AMAG Symmetry Access Control, Milestone Video Management, Rapid Response Monitoring, DMP Alarms, PowerDMS, JIRA, Intercoms systems.

This position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic campus environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to service excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement in support of the University’s safety and security mission.

This position is currently based at 57 Lock Street and will relocate with the team to 25 Science Park in Spring 2026.

Required Skills and Abilities

  1. Strong troubleshooting skills related to technical systems, access platforms, and reporting tools. Ability to identify, investigate, and triage data and system issues, and implement effective solutions.
  2. Knowledge of computer, network, and physical security systems, applications, procedures, and techniques.
  3. Familiarity with system and service automation using web services, webhooks, and database triggers.
  4. Experience with application monitoring, logging, and system performance analysis.
  5. Understanding of physical and virtual server environments.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  1. Experience with Milestone Video Management Systems.
  2. Experience with AMAG Symmetry Access Control Systems.
  3. Prior experience in a higher education or similarly complex institutional environment.
  4. Demonstrated experience leading technical teams and managing vendor relationships.
  5. Working knowledge of database technologies and relational data structures.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Manage a team responsible for the day-to-day activities of the University’s Access Control and ID Center groups. Monitor progress of assignments and projects of varying complexity to ensure milestones are met and communicated to all relevant stakeholders.
  2. Inspire and maintain a high performing team by communicating and creating transparency within the department.
  3. Recommend new and updated policies and procedures based on requirements, efficiencies and/or trends in support of unit are accurate, have been read and understood by all team members and up-to-date within PowerDMS.
  4. Assists in long-range planning for work unit such as identifying ways to improve services offerings or operational procedures.
  5. Fiscal responsibilities including participating in unit budget planning.
  6. Research, evaluate, and recommend new technology products and services to increase effectiveness and efficiencies.
  7. Understand and oversee each Public Safety system including but not limited to: AMAG Symmetry Access Control, Milestone Video Management, MASterMind Monitoring, DMP Alarms, PowerDMS, JIRA, WhatsUp Gold Network Monitoring, Vingtor-Stentofon Intercoms.
  8. Manage and oversee all administrative services and operations of the campus card system as well as all related systems, programs, and downstream consumers of ID Card data. These systems and services include but are not limited to the card provisioning & production, photo upload, and access control systems.
  9. Maintain equipment and supplies for unit.
  10. Build solid relationships and collaborate with University personnel, departments and schools to ensure highest customer satisfaction.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
