Job Description
Function of Position
Adjunct faculty members report to the program director for surgical technology and the chairperson of the nursing department. Adjunct faculty teach department courses and evaluate student performance per guidelines set by the department and Monroe Community College.
Courses in the department may be assigned as didactic, laboratory or clinical instruction. Adjunct faculty must maintain accurate records on students and submit pertinent data to the department and/or the College, including, but not limited to, attendance information, course information sheet, final exams, and final grades.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrates and maintains current subject area knowledge
- Teaches courses and evaluates student performance in surgical technology as per guidelines set by the department and Monroe Community College; instructional assignments can be didactic, laboratory or clinical.
- Teaches course(s)/section(s), as outlined by the contract and as available
- Prepares lesson plans and creates instructional materials and activities for student engagement
- Prepares Course Information Sheet/Syllabus/Outlines in accordance with department and College guidelines
- Establishes and maintains an engaging and supportive classroom environment
- Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other records according to department and College guidelines and submits them in a timely manner
- Assists department with student retention and completion initiatives
- Develops innovative teaching pedagogies to facilitate learning
- Incorporates high-impact teaching practices into course design, as appropriate
- Actively engages in pedagogical and academic professional development
- Instructs students during classroom, laboratory practice and/or simulation
- Supports clinical responsibilities as assigned
- Maintains collegial relationships with clinical facility and meets all requirements of clinical facility.
- Works independently and in a team setting
- Demonstrates excellent time management skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize workflow
- Stays current in Surgical Technology practice and actively participates in professional development
- Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Surgical Technology program director and department chair, as appropriate

Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Must be a graduate of an accredited degree program in surgical technology
- Must hold the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from NBSTSA for a minimum of two years
- Two years recent clinical experience in the surgical technologist role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years
- Must have two years minimum main operating room experience
- Ability to teach courses within the department
- Evidence of effective communication skills (interpersonal, speaking, and writing)
- Commitment to supporting an inclusive environment on campus
- Evidence of respect for and understanding of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs
- Evidence of commitment to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college
- Evidence of proficiency with technology
- Commitment to continued professional growth
Preferred Qualifications
- Clinical or didactic teaching experience in Surgical Technology
- Knowledge of, or experience in, implementing a variety of teaching strategies
- BS or higher from an accredited institution
- Awareness of the potential value of technology as a tool for teaching
- Experience with computerized student record management
Additional Information
Pay Rate for Fall 2024 & Spring 2025: Determined on adjunct rank and ranges from $1,181- $1,441 per contact hour.
Prohibition of Remote Work Outside New York State: Remote work locations outside New York State are not authorized by the College due to out-of-state tax and regulatory implications. In limited circumstances, prompted by business or operational needs, the College may approve requests to work remotely outside of New York State, on a short term, temporary basis.
Monroe Community College is seeking a pool of qualified applicants for possible temporary part-time faculty teaching assignments. These positions are filled on an as needed basis and are on-going recruitment efforts. Adjunct pools are open continuously and applicants are contacted/hired year-round for assignments based on college needs.
