Job Description

The School of Education, Social Work, and Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is continuously seeking qualified candidates for adjunct faculty teaching positions.

The Division offers coursework in educational leadership, educational foundations, and educational research at the masters and doctoral levels. THE INTENT OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS TO IDENTIFY A POOL OF ADJUNCT FACULTY WHO ARE QUALIFIED TO DELIVER GRADUATE LEVEL COURSES IN THE DIVISION OF EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP, POLICY AND FOUNDATIONS.

Responsibilities of UMKC Part-time Faculty Members

  1. Create and maintain civil and engaging learning environments
  2. Deliver curriculum through high quality course instruction
  3. Assess student learning of course objectives
    Use a variety of evaluation methods
    Use the early alert system to identify students at risk of failing, when applicable (UMKC Connect)
    Provide students with prompt, objective, fair feedback on their work
    Assign grades and maintain student records in accordance with university policy
  4. Adhere to and model university standards of professionalism
  5. Be accessible to students for conferences / consultations
  6. Engage in critical self-reflection and professional development

Part Time; not eligible for benefits. Hours vary according to opportunity. Contracts are generally issued on a semester-by-semester basis.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Appropriate degree for the level of class being taught
  • Experience/training relevant to the content area being taught
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to urban issues
  • Licensure or certification, if applicable

Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience teaching at the university level

  • Familiarity with various online management systems (e.g., Canvas)

Anticipated Hiring Range

A flat adjunct salary is determined based on level of education and number of courses being taught.

A complete application includes (a) letter of application detailing desire and qualifications to teach in one or more of the areas listed above, (b) curriculum vita, (c) minimum of one current letter of recommendation (must be on letterhead and signed), and (d) verification of licensure or certification, if appropriate. Transcripts reflecting the highest degree earned and any other degree that may be relevant for the course assignment are required before final hire.

You must combine all application materials (i.e., a letter expressing interest in and perspectives on the position, curriculum vita, letter of recommendation, copy of license/certification, and other supporting materials) into one PDF or Microsoft Word document and upload as your ‘resume attachment.’ Limit document name to 50 characters. Size limit 11MB. Do not include special characters (e.g., /, &, %, etc.).

The hiring official may contact references at later stages of screening, and candidates will receive prior notification.

Unofficial transcripts may be submitted initially, but OFFICIAL transcripts are required for hire (see below). The University requires that we maintain an official copy of your higher education transcripts.

An official copy of the transcript showing the highest degree and any other transcript relevant to the course taught must be sent to the Office of the Dean, Attention: Katherine Hawk, School of Education, 615 E. 52nd Street, Suite 347, Kansas City, Missouri 64110. Adjunct faculty teaching in the School of Education, Social Work, and Psychological Sciences are responsible for teaching regular courses as assigned by the Division Chairperson.

Appointment:
These are term, non-tenure-accruing positions. Appointment periods are for the semester with consideration for reappointment.
