Utah Valley University’s Department of Music invites passionate and qualified applicants to join our dynamic and student-centered faculty as an Adjunct Instructor of Aural Skills. This position offers the opportunity to teach across the Aural Skills sequence (I–IV), guiding students in developing essential musicianship through active listening, sight-singing, dictation, and rhythmic fluency. The successful candidate will bring a commitment to effective teaching, student success, and musical excellence.
As a valued member of our department, the instructor will contribute to a vibrant and collaborative academic environment. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include preparing course materials, assessing student progress, participating in departmental events such as juries or auditions, and attending required meetings. Additional teaching assignments may be available depending on departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise. This role is ideal for music educators dedicated to inspiring the next generation of musicians within a supportive and growing institution.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Teach courses in the Aural Skills sequence (Aural Skills I, II, III, IV).
- Plans and follows an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught.
- Prepares instructional materials and evaluates instruction and learning by means of written, oral, practical, and performance tests.
- Maintains a student-oriented approach to teaching.
- Participates in auditions, juries and master classes as needed.
- Submits student grades and all requested departmental materials in a timely manner.
- Attends required department and/or program meetings.
- Possible additional teaching assignments, based on candidate’s expertise and department need may include Private Lessons, Ensemble Coaching, Performance Class(es), Introduction to Music, American Popular Music, Theory, Aural Skills, Music History, Commercial Music, Music Technology, Composition, Music Education, or other courses in the music department
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in the subject matter or a closely related area OR a combination education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s or Doctorate degree preferred.
