Assistant Professor of Wind Studies - Music and Performing Arts

The Department of Music and Performing Arts at Hampton University, which houses the BA in Music (Performance and Music Education Pre-Certification), BS in Music Recording Technology, BS in Audio Production, BA in Theatre (Performance and Technical Theatre) is seeking to fill the Assistant Professor of Wind Studies position in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026.
The Hampton University Department of Music and Performing Arts invites applicants for the Director of Wind Studies, a full-time position in the Music area at the rank of assistant professor. The ideal candidate must have a Ph.D., D.A., D.M.A, or D.M. in Instrumental Conducting, Wind Conducting, or (Jazz Studies with large ensemble experience) with emphasis preferably with symphonic band/wind ensemble conducting experience. Applied instrument teaching experience is also preferred.
The successful candidate will provide leadership for all winds within the department including Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band, Concert Band and all Small Ensembles, and will direct large and small ensembles within the music program. As the Winds Area leader, the ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing and reporting to the department chair scheduling, performances, and logistics of the Winds area. The ideal candidate will also have experience in arranging, commercial and contemporary styles of theory and composition.

Duties and Job Requirements:
- Active Participation in student recruiting, auditions, recital hearings, recitals and committees
- Participate in curriculum and course development and revision/updates to the Music curriculum
- Develop and sustain an independent research agenda
- Serve as a mentor and advisor for students majoring in Music
- Participate in community outreach and engagement activities
- Participate in service to the department, division, university, and community; and
- Participate in on-campus department, division, college, and university meetings and assemblies, as well as university convocations and graduation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctorate in Music; a Ph.D., D.A., D.M.A, or D.M. in Instrumental Conducting, Wind Conducting or Jazz Studies with significant large ensemble experience (Degree must be conferred by the start of appointment)
- Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble conducting experience
- Demonstrate a commitment and strong potential for excellence in teaching, mentoring, and advising of HBCU undergraduate students
- Conduct ongoing, independent research resulting in scholarly outcomes
- An ongoing commitment to pedagogical innovation
- Demonstrate the ability and willingness to work collegially; and
- A commitment to service and the mission of Hampton University
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in applied instrument teaching
- Experience in arranging, commercial and contemporary styles of theory and composition and/or experience in music technology
