This is an exciting opportunity to join an innovative team at College of the Holy Cross. We are a private Jesuit liberal arts college in Worcester, Massachusetts. As part of the Department of Theatre & Dance and reporting to the Chair, the Musical Director will provide piano accompaniment for the Music Theatre program, assisting with the instruction of student instrumentalists and vocalists during the academic year. The Musical Director will oversee all aspects of music (including directing the pit band) for the annual musical production in the Department of Theatre & Dance. The hours for the position include significant time outside of teaching and accompanying required to prepare for the rehearsals, performances, and other duties.

Major Areas of Responsibility

This is a 40 hours/week salaried position for 10 months and serves as the Musical Director for the Theatre & Dance Department. Duties include:

  • Accompanying auditions for mainstage productions in September.
  • Playing for all musical rehearsals: Approximately 15 hours a week from mid-October through early December; Daily starting with a one-week intensive retreat for the Musical in mid-January until the musical closes mid-February.
  • Conducting the pit band during rehearsals and performances.
  • Recruiting, mentoring and instructing student musicians for the pit band.
  • Mentoring and instructing student vocalists during rehearsals and coaching sessions.
  • Collaborating with the Professor of Practice in Music Theatre (director of the annual musical).
  • Provide accompaniment for 3 music-based performance classes per year or an equivalent assignment.
  • Provide weekly individual vocal coaching and instruction for the aforementioned classes.
  • Accompanying student performers for occasional outreach events like College Open Houses or masterclasses.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Music and/or equivalent experience.
  • Significant experience and training in playing and performing on a professional level, preferably in Music Theatre.
  • Significant background coaching and or teaching student musicians and vocalists.
  • Experience prepping and rehearsing both vocal and instrumental ensembles for musicals.
  • Sufficient expertise to learn music quickly and perform at a high level with minimal rehearsal.

Additional information:

This is a full time, exempt level position. The salary for this position ranges from $58,000 - $63,000. The College is committed to providing competitive market pay for its employees.
