Adult Literacy Assistant (Part Time)

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY

The Adult Literacy Assistant is responsible for managing the Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) volunteer tutor program in the Coralville area. The assistant recruits and trains tutors, matching them with eligible students from AEL programs including high school completion and ELL. The assistant also collaborates with ELL and ABE/HSED instructors on student referrals and continuous program improvement. This position is about 10-12 hours a week, preferably Monday through Thursday.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit, train and manage volunteers for Kirkwood Adult Education and Literacy program. Recruitment is done through public service announcements, posters, and listings on volunteer websites. Training is done in both groups and individually as needed.
  • Respond to in person, phone and email requests for program information.
  • Maintain student and volunteer records, and provide student and volunteer reports as requested by supervisor.
  • Meet in person with all students seeking tutors to determine their needs. Administer CASAS assessment if appropriate.
  • Maintain a lending library of tutoring materials for volunteers.
  • Meet with other agencies and providers to publicize Kirkwood Adult literacy program.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An associate's degree is required in education or human service fields.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS

Prior experience with tutoring, teaching, work with ABE/HSED/ESL programs or organizing volunteers is preferred.
