Application Developer
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Application Developer for the Office Institutional Research. This position plans, designs, develops, and maintains a variety of systems serving faculty, university administrative officers, and the Office of Institutional Research and Decision Support (OIRDS). Works directly with the Manager to design, develop, and maintain systems/platforms that serve the University and the OIRDS.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Maintains and improves OIRDS applications (e.g., Faculty Survey, Packet Depot, PubSearch, Data Access Control, OIRDS homepage), ensuring they remain functional, user-friendly, and aligned with organizational objectives.
- Identifies and resolves issues in existing systems; refactor and optimize code to improve performance, reliability, and scalability.
- Ensures all applications comply with university policies and best practices for data privacy, secure access, and information protection.
- Translates functional requirements into detailed technical specifications, prototypes, and well-documented system designs.
- Builds new web-based tools and applications to support OIRDS data workflows, reporting processes, and information dissemination needs.
- Designs and implements secure data connections and workflows for importing/exporting data from internal and external sources (e.g., ORCID, HR systems).
- Ensures integration processes align with security standards and institutional data governance guidelines.
- Designs and enhances user interfaces with a focus on usability, accessibility, and responsive design across devices.
- Supports the creation and improvement of dashboards, web-based visualizations, and tools that help users interact with institutional data.
- Develops user-facing materials, guides, and in-system help content to assist with tool adoption and usage.
- Provides technical assistance for faculty and staff using OIRDS tools, addressing inquiries and troubleshooting issues in a timely and professional manner.
- Creates and maintains instructional materials such as step-by-step tutorials, quick guides, and FAQs to facilitate user self-service.
Minimum Education and Experience:
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Informatics, or a related field with three or more years of programming experience with a solid knowledge of current program languages and methodologies.
