The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Department of Clinical Sciences (DCS) at Colorado State University invites applications for a 12-month Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Anesthesia. The successful candidate will share clinical responsibilities at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH; small animal, non-traditional species), Equine Johnson Family Equine Hospital (JFEH), and Translational Medicine Institute (TMI) with 4 tenure track and 3 non-tenure track faculty, and a broad-based team of hospitalists and experienced veterinary technicians. Currently there are 3 anesthesia residents. There are also opportunities to work with zoological species in partnership with two zoological parks and an animal sanctuary. The candidate will be primarily responsible for clinical service with a commitment of 18 – 26 weeks on duty pending other research and teaching commitments. There are limited primary duty after hours requirements of the position. However, the position will back up our highly trained anesthesia after hours veterinarian and residents (on site for the first few months of their program). The candidate will be expected to participate in the teaching of professional veterinary medical and graduate students, and it is anticipated they will provide continuing education to veterinarians and veterinary technicians. The DCS, animal hospitals and TMI are located on the South Campus of Colorado State University and have maintained a strong tradition of excellence in anesthesia with successful DVM and post-graduate training programs. Additional growth in the form of a building dedicated to DVM education and primary care is anticipated to open next year. The anesthesia service team provides sedation, anesthesia and analgesia for client owned animals as well as for animals used in teaching and research. In addition, the team teaches and trains visiting veterinarians, residents, interns and students in all 4 years of the CSU-DVM curriculum.

The VHS maintains state-of-the-art equipment and facilities with plans to enhance these within the small animal specialty hospital over the next few years. A state-of-the-art Equine Hospital opened recently and groundbreaking for the new Livestock hospital will soon take place. Advanced cardiac imaging, an integrated hybrid operating room to support interventional and surgical capabilities (e.g., open heart surgery), broad based imaging capabilities (e.g., MRI, CT scanners, ultrasound and radiographic capabilities for large and small animal patients), and therapeutic (e.g., radiation therapy) modalities are currently available on Veterinary Health System campus. In addition to providing veterinary services to local clients CSU is a preeminent tertiary care facility with a broad-based caseload to support numerous primary (e.g., internal medicine, ophthalmology, oncology) and support (e.g., anesthesia, imaging, critical care, pathology) services.

In addition to investigator driven research, collaborative opportunities exist for partnership with clinical and basic science departments within the college, university colleagues, as well as with nearby institutions including Poudre Valley Hospital, the University of Colorado, Denver Children’s Hospital, and regional biomedical facilities. The state-of-the-art research facility (C. Wayne McIlwraith Translational Medicine Institute) adjacent to the VTH offers additional opportunities for translational medical research and veterinary medical continuing education.

A signing bonus may be considered for successful candidates.
