About the Department

The department has nine graduate programs, including three doctoral programs (Counseling Psychology, Counselor Education and Practice, and School Psychology) and three CACREP master’s programs (Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, and School Counseling), and offers Ed.S. degrees in both School Counseling and School Psychology. The Counseling Psychology Program, Department of Counseling and Psychological Services, and Georgia State University have a strong commitment to contextualizing interventions and psychological practice to the backgrounds of those we serve.
Our mission is to advance the fields of counseling and psychology by promoting rigorous research, applying evidence-based treatments, and advocating for effective social policies. Position Description

The Department of Counseling and Psychological Services at Georgia State University is searching for a tenure-track, assistant or associate professor in the Counseling Psychology doctoral program. Potential research and training interests might focus on a variety of themes consistent with foundational strengths of Counseling Psychology, including but not limited to multiculturalism, prevention science, career, or positive psychology. Candidates will advance a focused line of research that has long-term potential for external research funding. An ideal candidate would have a research agenda that can support doctoral students in collaborative research. In addition, the faculty member will teach master’s and doctoral level courses for the department.

Required Experience

The individual chosen for this position must have an earned doctorate from an APA­ accredited program in psychology at the time of appointment.

Required Education

Assistant Tenure-Track Professor Position: No prior experience is required.

Associate Tenure-Track Professor Position: A minimum of 5 years of full-time teaching at the graduate level is required.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

Assistant Tenure-Track Professor Position:
-Active participation in research activities, including scholarship and professional presentations
-Evidence of teaching effectiveness at either the undergraduate or graduate level.
-Eligibility for licensure as a psychologist in Georgia is preferred.

Associate Tenure-Track Professor Position:
-History of scholarly activity related to a consistent research line
-Documented teaching effectiveness at the graduate level
-Professional service contributions at the national level.
-Eligibility for licensure as a psychologist in Georgia is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge:
    o Expertise in key areas of counseling psychology curriculum
    o Expertise in research methodology sufficient to mentor doctoral students
  • Skills:
    o Proficient in conducting and publishing scholarly research.
    o Effective mentorship skills for graduate students including chairing dissertations.
    o Strong teaching skills with the ability to design and deliver graduate-level counseling courses.
  • Abilities:
    o Ability to develop and maintain a focused line of research and secure external funding.
    o Ability to serve as core faculty in a doctoral program in Counseling Psychology program.
