The Division of Transplant Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a full-time, board-certified transplant surgeon with minimum of 3 years' experience. This is an exceptional opportunity for a transplant or recovery surgeon to become a full-time member, with extensive on-call duties, with the clinical recovery team.

The Organ Recovery Surgeon serves as a key ambassador for donation by modeling and controlling the intraoperative behavior of all recovery team members. He/she is primarily accountable for the surgical procurement and preservation of donor abdominal organs to be used for transplantation, research, and education. Additionally, the Organ Recovery Surgeon participates in quality assurance performance improvement and research activities aimed at increasing donation and improving transplant outcomes.

The qualified candidate will demonstrate support of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Donor Alliance (Organ Procurement Organization) and UCHealth missions, while providing exceptional recovery services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform surgical organ recovery to local and national standards for organ transplantation. Serves as the primary procurement surgeon for abdominal organs.
  • Assume on-call responsibilities, as required, to assure adequate coverage for organ donor procurements. When on-call, must be available to surgically recover organs at a time set by Donor Alliance staff and the Administrator On-Call.
  • Serve as a member of the University of Colorado Hospital Transplant Center to surgically recover abdominal organs for transplantation, research, and education throughout the Donor Alliance service area.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of mechanical preservation for abdominal organs and places and manages organs on preservation equipment, as appropriate.
  • Support compliance with CMS, UNOS, and AOPO standards and/or other medical/legal and regulatory requirements of Donor Alliance and UCHealth.
  • Assume primary responsibility (when present) for managing the donor operative environment in collaboration with Donor Alliance staff.
  • Maintain on-going knowledge, and actively involved in the development/revision and implementation of UNOS policies/protocols and procedures concerning the testing (evaluation for suitability & donor management), recovery and placement of postmortem organs.
  • Advises staff regarding the safety and suitability of donor organs and communicates with transplant centers as necessary to discuss potential issues in organ offers.
  • Is available to provide assistance, when requested (on-site or via consultation), to the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) and/or Donor Alliance staff to evaluate and maintain potential organ donors. This may include assistance when needed with donor management, determination of donor suitability for donation and organ recovery, and placement in high risk cases.
  • Interact with Medical Examiners/Coroners and referring physicians to facilitate the donation process.
  • Evaluate, recommend and complete research programs or projects.
  • Arbitrate transplant team related difficulties when necessary.
  • Aid in the training of University of Colorado Hospital staff in the evaluation and medical management aspects of the donation process.
  • Aid in the development and oversight of quality control and quality assurance programs within University of Colorado Hospital and Donor Alliance.
  • Participate in Corrective Action and Preventative Action (CAPA) investigations and follow up with families and physicians when necessary.
  • As appropriate, participate in organ donor case review and focus on learning and improving donation and transplantation outcomes.
  • Ensure timely, complete and accurate documentation for all procedures.

Work Location: Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite (wherever the donor is being procured).

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Assistant Professor:

  • 0-6 years experience
  • Medical Degree from an accredited School of Medicine
  • Completion of transplant fellowship in liver, kidney and pancreas at an accredited Transplant Center
  • Eligibility for Board Certification – must complete boards within 2 years
  • Colorado Medical License and DEA number

Associate Professor:

  • 6-10 years' experience
  • Medical Degree from an accredited School of Medicine
  • Completion of transplant fellowship in liver, kidney and pancreas at an accredited Transplant Center
  • Eligibility for Board Certification – must complete boards within 2 years
  • Colorado Medical License and DEA number

Preferred Qualifications (Both Ranks):

  • Experience with DCD organ recovery
  • Experience in ex-vivo perfusion
  • Experience with normothermic regional perfusion

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Assistant Professor - $362,000 – 440,000, plus productivity incentives when eligible.

Associate Professor - $401,000- $488,000, plus productivity incentives when eligible

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
