Assistant Athletic Director of Development
Overview
The Assistant Athletic Director of Development will play a pivotal role in advancing one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs. Reporting directly to the Associate Athletic Director for Development, this individual will serve as a strategic member on the Yale Athletics Development staff assisting in leading and supporting a dynamic fundraising operation of Yale’s 35 varsity teams. This position will help shape and execute a high-impact development strategy focused on securing annual and major gifts. The Assistant Athletic Director will be instrumental in cultivating meaningful relationships with alumni, parents, and friends of Yale Athletics. Responsibilities include overseeing volunteer initiatives, managing key projects, meeting annual fundraising goals, and delivering exceptional stewardship experiences that deepen donor commitment. The Assistant Athletic Director manages the communication, fundraising, and organizational efforts of select associations, while overseeing and assisting with monthly, quarterly and annual events to engage Yale student-athlete alumni. In addition, this role develops and implements an effective fundraising plan(s) for strategic engagement in raising annual funds to meet/exceed annual goals and drive revenue targets for all Yale’s Athletic Associations. The position is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gift prospects for the athletic department. This position’s portfolio will also include execution of golf outings, foreign tour fundraising, capital projects, and others areas as assigned. In addition to frontline fundraising, the Assistant Athletic Director will oversee the Assistant Director, Events and Alumni Affairs. Assistant Athletic Director of Development combines revenue generation, relationship-building, and event management in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment and the ability to travel for meetings and special events, nights and weekends required.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Entrepreneurial approach to fundraising, with a keen appreciation for the specific challenges of working with prospects who may lack a direct affiliation and/or involvement with Yale Athletics. Knowledge of and proficiency in annual fundraising strategies and techniques. Proven success with individual fundraising.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to donors, volunteers, and colleagues as well as University leadership and students. Professionalism, maturity, good judgment, and ability to foster and work well in a team environment. High level of integrity and ability to exercise confidentiality and discretion.
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects with excellent attention to detail. Knowledge of and proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn Yale University databases.
- Highly motivated and energetic. Ability to work independently and self motivate.
- Strong quantitative skills. Ability to analyze data and implement into solicitation strategies.
Principal Responsibilities
- Composes a wide variety of written materials including detailed individual prospect briefings, acknowledgements, stewardship letters and gift proposals, plus alumni and donor communications for alumni, press releases, alumni updates, etc.
- Promotes increased alumni/ae participation and involvement, through active engagement with class agents, class secretaries and support of the Alumni Board, as appropriate. a. Develops strategies, participation and revenue goals for Annual Fund; assists in the implementation of annual fund strategies, coordinates with the Central Development Office, and the school class agents. b. Works with current students to promote future giving through programs such as class gifts, SIG’s, phonathon, etc. c. Assists in the development and implementation of alumni events, including annual reunion and regional events.
- Supports management in a range of capacities as needed, including prospect strategy design and implementation, report generation and manipulation of information systems.
- Coordinates publicity and outreach efforts on behalf of the office.
- Provides research on individuals and/or corporations and foundation using office files, databases, and Internet search engines and resources.
- Provides pre-award support for corporation and foundation proposals, including budget preparation, and completing pre-proposal administrative forms and correspondence for business office review and approval.
- Creates summaries of the prospect pool with respect to giving, status, affiliation, and other focus points as needed.
- Manages interaction between the school Development Office and University Research department to optimize top prospect development interests.
- Interacts with alums and major gifts donors to provide cultivation and stewardship as appropriate.
- Coordinates events including reunion, Leadership Council, Alumni donor receptions, etc.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and four years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary Range
$65,000.00 - $101,000.00
