Job Description:
SUNY Broome Community College has an immediate opening for an in-person, full-time, Assistant Controller I in the Finance Office. The Assistant Controller I reports to the Associate Vice President & Controller or the Assistant Controller II. This position performs professional accounting duties with regard to review, analysis, and supervision of financial and accounting records and is responsible for daily accounting controls. This position is represented by the GUILD bargaining unit.
This position has a standard workweek of Monday through Friday, occasional Saturday as needed.
The Assistant Controller I effectively communicates knowledge of accounting principles, best practices, procedures, and regulations to the accounting staff as well as other professional counterparts in key college offices and outside agencies. Coordinates and is responsible for assigned reconciliations, grant billing and receiving, payroll accounting, interfacing from sub-ledgers to general ledgers and capital project accounting.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Monitors cash flow and account flow of Federal, State, and other local grant programs. Supervises grant accounting and audits financial records of grants.
- Provides professional accounting duties for capital projects.
- Prepares accounting schedules and forms, assists with budget development, cash flow analysis, and reconciliation of projects to Broome County and SUNY personnel.
- Assists with the College's New York State Annual Financial Report and the College's Annual External Audit.
- Prepares journal entries, various schedules, inclusive, but not limited to the College fiscal year-end.
- Reconciles balance sheet accounts, prepares trial balances, and other financial schedules. Monitors and analyzes financial data, prepares reports, identifies discrepancies, and works on resolution as well as oversight of correction processes.
- Interacts with personnel in college departments to provide information, guidance, and development of internal controls. Assists in the development, implementation, and testing of internal controls.
- Assists in training new staff members and supports staff development. Plans, assigns, and reviews staff's work providing guidance on accounting matters including instruction and advise on technical accounting practices and procedures.
- Responsible for supervising and coordinating payroll accounting functions. Prepares, reviews, and may enter payroll reallocations, payroll adjustment, and payroll voids. Verifies disbursement requests for payroll deductions and benefits.
Requirements:
- A Bachelor's degree with specialization in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field with eighteen (18) credits of accounting is required.
- Knowledge of Title IV student financial aid accounting principles and procedures is desirable.
- Three (3) years of accounting experience is required. A minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience is required.
- Position requires thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures, including internal auditing, accounting, fiscal management, and working knowledge of computerized accounting systems and spreadsheets.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local grant funding practices and procedures is desirable.
- Strong ability to analyze complex financial data, reports, and financial statements, review information, identify problems, and propose solutions. Perform research, interpret a variety of specific needs, and generate activity reports in response to internal and external requests.
- Ability to manage (plan, budget, staff, evaluate), effectively a department with a variety of functions and supervise work of others.
- Physical requirements of position are typical of office work environment and may require extended hours during certain times of the fiscal year.
- Applicant must possess strong interpersonal skills combined with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a diverse population of staff, students, and outside agencies.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship.
Additional Information:
The minimum salary for this position is $68,361. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Offers of employment will be conditional based upon the results of a satisfactory, required pre-employment Standard Background Check.
