Assistant Director
A unit within the portfolio of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Chicano Student Programs (CSP) is an essential department that provides academic support services, mentoring/leadership development, co-and extra-curricular programming, K-14 outreach and non-academic counseling for all UC Riverside students with an emphasis on Chicano/a/x Latino/a/x scholars. In collaboration with the Director, the Assistant Director develops, plans, implements and evaluates programs, services, initiatives and activities for CSP. The Assistant Director assumes direct responsibility for the office in the absence of the Director and functions as the key architect in the development of programs, policies, and practices.
The incumbent independently analyzes campus-wide needs to develop a programmatic response, serving as a subject matter expert on Chicano/a/x Latino/a/x undergraduate and graduate student success. In conjunction with the Director, the incumbent implements long-range planning, leadership and outreach that increases constituent engagement with CSP and provides strategic direction for the center. The Assistant Director collaborates with campus departments to address cross-issue social justice, diversity organizing, equity and inclusion.
The Assistant Director advocates for the well-being of students, with a specific focus on Chicano/a/x Latino/a/x students, to advance knowledge and awareness of their success at a Hispanic Serving Research Institution. In collaboration with the CSP Director, the Assistant Director develops and implements partnerships to improve outcomes and provide high-impact student services related to recruitment, development, enrichment, inclusion, retention, degree attainment and enhancing the student experience of Chicano/Latino students across all disciplines. The Assistant Director will supervise the Program Coordinator.
Requirements:
- Educational Requirements: Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training (required); Master's degree (preferred).
- Experience Requirements: 6-10 years of related experience (required).
- Minimum Requirements: Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques; advanced knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Life specialization; skills in judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving; advanced abilities in project management and developing original ideas; advanced knowledge of issues related to Chicano/a/x Latino/a/x student success; ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues; excellent organizational skills; knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the needs of Chicano/a/x Latino/a/x students; knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion; demonstrated knowledge of supervisory and personnel management skills; demonstrated background in educational program development; experience in a lead role; familiarity with UC Riverside or comparable academic institution.
- Preferred Qualifications: Advanced knowledge of University-specific computer applications; Master's degree in Raza Studies, Ethnic Studies, Student Affairs, or related field; bilingual fluency in English and Spanish.
Key Responsibilities:
- Independently resolves the most complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life issues (25%).
- Develops and maintains complex or sensitive relationships with external organizations critical to program success and represents the organization to relevant audiences (15%).
