Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, or closely related field.
- 3 years of full-time experience working in university housing, residence life or student affairs.
- Experience hearing conduct cases in a residential environment.
- At least 1 year of experience with supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience managing residential communities.
- Experience developing and conducting assessment.
- Experience with designing training programs specifically for conduct and care processes.
- Understanding of NABITA case management practices.
- Knowledge of laws and legal principles relevant to residence life, conduct and care.
Job Description:
The Assistant Director for Residential Conduct and Care provides leadership for the conduct processes and student care responses within the residence halls. This position will supervise full-time professional staff Case Managers. The Assistant Director will report to the Director for Residential Experience in Housing and Residential Life at Texas State University.
Job Duties:
Staff Supervision
- Supervise and provide leadership for up to two full-time Case Managers for Conduct and Care. Indirectly supervise 24-28 Residence Directors, and 290+ Resident Advisors and communicate expectations and monitor work processes.
- Provide ongoing direction & feedback about performance through weekly 1:1 meetings.
- Evaluate performance, including conducting performance evaluations effectively and efficiently and attending to their professional development.
- Assist in the recruitment and hiring of direct reports, including reviewing applicant materials, conducting candidate interviews, and offering recommendations for hiring.
Student Conduct
- Provide leadership for the implementation of the university conduct and care process for cases that occur within the residence halls.
- Serve as conduct administrator for all university-managed residence halls and apartment communities; monitor and review all on-campus conduct incident reports; track and monitor conduct cases using Maxient database; follow up with hall staff on case status and provide updates as needed to department leadership, Title IX, and Dean of Students partners.
- Develop and implement educational sanctions that promote student development.
- Train all Housing and Residential Life professional and student staff members regarding university and departmental conduct philosophy, Maxient Software, and expectations regarding student conduct.
- Create semester and yearly reports regarding conduct violation trends, conduct officer timelines, and make recommendations on improvements to structure and implementation of conduct process.
- Review student handbook policies for trends/behaviors in violation of policies.
- Adjudicate conduct cases for higher level reports.
- Serve as the primary appeals officer for residential conduct cases.
On-Call Responsibility & Student Support
- Participate in 24-hour on-call rotation with live-in professional staff colleagues; recognize that residence halls are open 365 days/year and therefore being on-call during holidays should be expected; respond to student and/or facilities issues/crises as a third-tier responder and in person as needed 24-hours a day; high level of in-person response to mental health concerns, other student support situations should be expected.
- Consistent communication with senior leadership during crises/emergencies; maintain accurate incident reports using Maxient Software.
- Work with departmental and divisional teams to respond to critical incidents on campus; work with other departments to provide an appropriate response to crises.
- Identify personal and emotional concerns of students; provide appropriate resources and referrals; track and monitor student issues using Maxient database; maintain contact with parents and other constituencies as appropriate.
Student Care, Advocacy & Outreach
- Provide individualized care to address student concerns within Housing & Residential Life and work to eliminate barriers to retention.
- Lead efforts to manage care cases for residence hall students using NABITA assessment practices in collaboration with the Dean of Students.
- Develop and maintain rapport with residents through regular student contact; assess needs and concerns of residents; advocate for students in all aspects of their housing and educational experience.
- Serve as a liaison with other departments and offices on campus, including University Police, Dean of Students, Title IX, Health Services, Counseling Services, and Academic Advising.
- Represent HRL on various Student Behavioral Assessment Teams (SBAT) and provide high-level summaries for leadership decision making on interim measures.
Unit Leadership
- Serve on the Residential Experience leadership team, managing and coordinating unit initiatives in support of departmental and divisional priorities.
- Collaborate with other Assistant and Associate Directors in Residential Experience to deliver consistent experience across all Residence Directors and communities.
- Monitor budgets associated with the functional area of oversight and the residential area of supervision.
- Represent the Department, the Division, and the University to students, families, alumni, and other stakeholders.
- Engage in ongoing professional development, keeping current with best practices and legal landscape of conduct and care in the residential setting.
