Position Summary

Make a real impact on students' college experience at Doane University! We're looking for a passionate Assistant Director of Residential Life & Education to help lead and strengthen a dynamic residential community. This full-time, 12-month professional staff role lives right in the heart of campus with a private two-bedroom apartment, a reserved parking space, and access to our meal plan when dining services are active. You will support a thriving residential community, mentor both student and professional leaders, and enjoy being at the center of campus life.

The Assistant Director oversees an upperclass suite-style residence hall of 126 students, mentors Community Advisors, and supports the hiring, training, supervision, and professional development of Community Directors. The role also supports key departmental operations, including the housing placement process, student care and crisis response, and the continued development of living-learning and themed residential communities. Working closely with campus partners, the Assistant Director helps create engaging residential environments that foster student success, leadership, and belonging.

The Assistant Director should be a leader in promoting an inclusive and equitable environment. Residential communities must model an environment that supports students of all identities, worldviews, and backgrounds, while actively identifying and eliminating systemic barriers that have created disparities in outcomes for underrepresented students.

FLSA: Salaried (Exempt)

Salary Salary for this position ranges from $48,000 to $52,000 per year.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, student affairs, or a closely related field, with a minimum of three (3) years of full-time professional experience in higher education, residential life, student support, public health, counseling, or a related field.

Professional experience should demonstrate:

  • Experience working in housing, residential life, or student support services.
  • Strong understanding of student development theory and best practices in supporting college students.
  • Demonstrated communication, collaboration, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and thrive in a fast-paced, student-centered environment.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse campus community.
  • Experience with financial management, including developing and managing budgets.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking, active listening, and professional writing (including reports).
  • Strong relationship-building skills with students, faculty, staff, families, and alumni
  • A self-motivated, adaptable mindset and comfort working in a dynamic, evolving environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with engaged, high-energy college students.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, education, public health, or a closely related field, with 4-5 years of professional experience in higher education, residential life, student support, counseling, or a related field.

Professional experience may demonstrate:

  • Experience working in a residential college or university environment, particularly within a residential liberal arts setting.
  • Familiarity with residential curriculum models and professional frameworks such as CAS Standards and NASPA's Learning Reconsidered.
  • Involvement in professional organizations such as ACUHO-I, NASPA, ACPA, or similar associations.
  • Knowledge of student conduct processes and student concern tracking systems.
  • Experience developing and implementing assessment strategies to measure program effectiveness and student learning outcomes.

Required Licenses/Certifications

A valid driver's license and driving record are acceptable to the university's automobile insurance provider.

Working Conditions

The position includes a live-in requirement in the residential hall, with a two-bedroom apartment provided. The role includes a reserved parking space, and pet and partner policies are available in accordance with university guidelines. A meal plan is also provided when the university dining plan is active.
