Position Announcement

The attorney serving in the Assistant General Counsel position in the Office of General Counsel (OGC) reports directly to the University's General Counsel. The Assistant General Counsel advises and represents the University on a broad array of higher education legal issues, with a focus on student affairs, Title IX, Compliance, and policy development. This attorney devotes significant attention to mitigating University liability risk and supporting the University in student-related issues (including housing, academic and behavioral misconduct), Title IX or protected class discrimination, harassment, retaliation, disability issues, contract review, advising campus committees, and providing various legal trainings as needed. The Assistant General Counsel functions with minimal supervision, but is a collaborating team member within OGC. This attorney frequently provides legal advice in other practice areas as needed. The ability to recognize issues of concern, solve problems, propose potential resolutions, provide needed follow-up, and work collaboratively is imperative.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise excellent judgment.
  • Provide timely, accessible, responsive, and sound legal advice and services to University employees, committees, and other constituents in a collaborative professional environment.
  • Communicate effectively with high-level University officials and stakeholders.
  • Analyze and manage complex matters in a timely effective manner.
  • Perform legal and factual research and analyses.
  • Prepare and review legal correspondence and documents.
  • Review and respond to GRAMA requests.
  • Assist with the formulation and drafting of rules, policies and procedures.
  • Provide training on legal interpretations and issues to University administrators, staff, and designated representatives.
  • Review and/or approve contracts and agreements as to legality and form, and make recommendations for approval of legal documents.
  • Advise and participate on University committees.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the General Counsel.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate from accredited law school,
  • Strong academic preparation.
  • Licensure and good standing in the Utah Bar.
  • Minimum of 3 years of legal experience in areas related to the above responsibilities (some experience in a higher education or a government law setting preferred), demonstrating continuous growth and a record of independently exercising good judgment and discretion.
  • Personal and professional integrity.
  • Excellent judgment and legal skills.
  • Excellent analytical, advocacy, problem-solving, and case management skills.
  • Exceptional written and client communication and relationship-building skills, and the ability to establish and maintain collegial and collaborative working relationships within the Office of General Counsel and across the University.
  • Sensitivity to, and an understanding of, the complex nature of working for an institution of higher education, where the need for a collaborative working style, flexibility, adaptability, and patience are critical to success.
  • Prior experience with contracts at an institution of higher education or in government or private practice preferred.
  • Experience managing complex legal issues preferred.
  • Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends.
  • Ability to develop and implement legal strategies and solutions.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
  • Knowledge of legal documentation procedures and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of legal research.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit clear legal memoranda and other written materials.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations and training.
  • Knowledge of contract documents and specifications.
  • Ability to draft clear legal documents including MOUs and affiliation agreements.
  • Ability to formulate and revise policies and handbooks.
  • Knowledge of process requirements of administrative hearings and litigation.
  • Ability to represent University officials in various administrative proceedings and other settings.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time overtime-exempt staff position. Annual salary of $115,000. Desired start date of October/November 2025.
