Legal Assistant

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is a high-volume, fast-paced, and intellectually engaging legal office. OGC provides legal services for the College and is committed to providing pragmatic and solution-oriented legal advice in a timely manner. OGC works to further the College's mission, strategic plans, and objectives as determined by its internal College clients. OGC promotes and protects the interests of the College, including compliance with all applicable policies, laws, and regulations. Reporting to the General Counsel, the Legal Assistant is responsible for utilizing professional skills in support of the Office of General Counsel, including, but not limited to, the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Assist College attorneys in responding to claims, lawsuits, legal matters, and other project requests, including, but not limited to, compliance activities, legal and governmental filings, review and maintenance of forms, procedures and policies, and preparation of training materials and written reports.
  • Review, revise, and negotiate a wide variety of contracts, including, but not limited to, SAAS contracts, vendor contracts, study abroad agreements, athletics sponsorship agreements, and other procurement agreements. Appropriately assess and elevate complicated contractual issues for legal review and advice. Prepare and maintain delegations of authority.
  • Research and report on federal, state and local laws, regulations, government guidelines, cases, pertinent legal changes and other issues.
  • Assist in the preparation of correspondence and legal documentation for attorney review; compile, review, organize, and analyze evidence, data, and documents. Cross-check and validate information and proofread documents. Document review, redaction, and preparation for production in connection with legal matters.
  • Organize, track, and maintain case and other files to ensure they are up-to-date and all necessary information for use by the attorneys is readily available. Assist in scheduling, calendar management, and other organizational tasks as required or requested by OGC attorneys, including but not limited to, calendaring litigation and other deadlines, organizing and coordinating meetings and event arrangements, and handling other necessary logistics for the Office of the General Counsel.
  • Provide administrative support to OGC attorneys, including assistance managing and prioritizing projects, events and training sessions, creating and maintaining data and logs, greeting visitors, answering phones, filing, processing invoices, budgeting activities, and general office management.
  • Support the maintenance of a campus climate that values and respects all of its community members.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Required education: Bachelor's degree
  • Required experience: Two years' work experience or an additional academic degree providing experience with legal research and writing and contract review and revision across a broad range of contract types.
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • Track record of producing high-quality work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Excellent and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with OGC attorneys, faculty, staff, students, and external constituents
  • Strong planning and organization abilities
  • Strong research, analytical, critical thinking and report-generating skills
  • Ability to handle matters with the highest degree of confidentiality, professionalism, ethics and integrity
  • Ability to work effectively with and treat all people in a respectful manner
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and perform duties with a high level accuracy, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • Experience in using legal research databases (e.g., Westlaw, PACER) and knowledge of legal terminology
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word (including track changes and compare functionality), Excel, and PowerPoint, Google applications (including, but not limited to, Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs), and Adobe Acrobat (including PDF editing)
  • Ability to undertake light lifting up to approximately 25 pounds as periodically required, to sit for prolonged periods, and to engage in some repetitive motions.
  • Ability to work in a full-time, in-person, on-campus position, which may include working extended hours, evenings, or weekends as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Similar prior work experience in higher education
  • Experience with litigation and compliance filings
  • Strong understanding of, and experience with, the use of AI research tools

Additional information: This is a full time, exempt level position. The College is committed to providing competitive market pay for its employees. The salary range for this position is $61,500-$69,000.
