SUMMARY

The Department of Dance at SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Dance with expertise in the practice, education, and research of movement analysis and modern dance. The successful candidate will become a part of a nationally recognized and diverse team faculty and professional staff. This position supports the department's continuing development of dance curriculum within the BA, BS, and BFA courses of study curriculums. Mentoring graduate and undergraduate student scholars in the research and creation of dance for media and stage is also a responsibility of this position.

The successful candidate will be called upon teach in other movement and/or theory course to their area or interest/expertise, design new and innovative course work, create choreography for student and faculty concerts, serve as artistic director for department concerts, build experiential learning experiences on and off campus, connect the department and the campus to the dance community beyond the university, and participate in shared governance throughout the campus.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Teaching (50%)

• Expected 3-3 course load, teaches both studio and theory courses
• Engages in experiential and hands-on education
• Manages student advisement
• Chairs graduate thesis
• Directs student concerts
• Develops curriculum

• Engages in scholarly activity to produce scholarly publications and related scholarly work
  • Publish peer reviewed articles in peer-reviewed national or international journals, conducts professional presentations at regional and national conferences, and engages in other scholarly activities

• Engages in enrollment and retention initiatives
• Attends University events
• Provides service to the department, University, community, and profession

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

• Terminal degree in Dance or related field from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university
• Minimum of one year of full-time experience teaching dance majors in higher education
• Experience teaching Laban Movement Analysis (Certification required through LIMS, IMS or CET)
• Experience teaching all levels of Modern/Contemporary Dance to undergraduate Dance Majors
• Ability to teach at least three of the following topics: Undergraduate Dance History, Dance Theory, Kinesiology, Pedagogy, Somatics, Yoga, Dance Conditioning/Health and Wellness for Dance
• Ability to choreograph and serve as director for department concerts
• Current research agenda with scholarly activity at an established level
• Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with the department faculty, staff, and directors
• Demonstrate a commitment to working with individuals from a variety of communities and cultures, and encourage diversity in the curriculum, student body, and faculty

• Experience and certification to teach Yoga (certification in ERYT 500 and/or RPYT)
• Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research and/or choreography
• Professional performance or choreography experience in the field of dance
• Demonstrated interest in contributing to the evolution of dance curriculum in higher education
