Assistant Professor in AI in Digital Agriculture and Sustainability
Job Summary
Maastricht University seeks an Assistant Professor to use expertise in Artificial Intelligence to advance sustainable agriculture and food systems, developing AI and data science solutions for challenges in food production and environmental resilience.
Responsibilities
- Conduct innovative research and develop an independent, externally funded research program in agritech, artificial intelligence, and agrifood domains.
- Publish and present work in leading journals and at international conferences.
- Collaborate with colleagues in data science, agriculture, food, and sustainability, both within the university and with external partners.
- Teach at bachelor’s and master’s levels in AI, climate data, machine learning, and related topics.
- Supervise and mentor PhD candidates, postdocs, and student projects, fostering a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.
- Engage in leadership and service, including community outreach, industry partnerships, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A PhD in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with expertise in AI and/or ICT for agriculture, food, and sustainability.
- Proven research skills in AI, machine learning, or data science, ideally applied to agrifood or environmental domains.
- A strong publication record and experience in securing research funding, or clear potential to do so.
- Teaching experience and excellent communication skills in English; knowledge of Dutch is an asset.
- A collaborative mindset and experience working in interdisciplinary environments.
- Preferred: Experience with advanced AI techniques such as deep learning, computer vision, and NLP in agritech applications, and familiarity with regulatory, ethical, and data privacy considerations.
What the Employer Offers
- Employment in scale 11 according to UFO profile Assistant Professor, with salary ranging from €4,728 to €6,433 gross per month based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week.
- An initial employment contract for 18 months at 1.0 FTE, convertible to indefinite upon proven suitability.
- 29 vacation days, four additional days off, and the possibility to accrue up to 12 extra days through compensation hours.
