Assistant Professor, Middle English or Old English Language and Literature
About the Position:
The CWRU English Department looks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Medieval English language and literature, specializing in Middle English or Old English, beginning July 1, 2026. Successful applicants should present a record of publication or clear promise of it, a record of strong teaching, and a commitment to departmental and institutional service. In addition to undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialization, they will teach the survey (required of majors) in English Literature to 1800 and undergraduate courses in late-medieval and early-modern literature. Teaching ability in History of the English Language and/or History of Criticism is desirable, though ancillary. The teaching load is 2:2.

CWRU is an independent research university located in Cleveland's University Circle, a square mile urban district of cultural, medical, educational, religious, and social service institutions. We enroll over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate/professional students in both liberal arts and professional/technical disciplines. The English department includes undergraduate and graduate offerings in literature, creative writing, and rhetoric that complement our undergraduate offerings in film, linguistics, and journalism. It also includes the Writing Program, which oversees the university's first-year academic writing curriculum and includes a substantial Writing Resource Centerthat serves all CWRU writers, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. The department is also home to Writers House, a gathering place for writers that supports community programming, craft workshops, and the New Gutenberg Annex, which is a moveable type print lab and book arts workshop.
Qualifications
- PhD in English or closely related field at the time of appointment
- Specialization in Middle English language and literature or Old English language and literature.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness
- Demonstrated ability in scholarly research and plans for the publication of a first book.
