FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Black Studies Department at The City College of New York invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Black Studies who is firmly situated, trained, and credentialed in the field of Black Studies. Candidates should possess a PhD in hand by August, 2026. In addition, the faculty member’s research and teaching area should be centered in the social sciences. Preference will be given to a faculty member in Urban Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Legal Studies, Economics, Political Science, or Architecture.

Black Studies is an interdisciplinary, collaborative department focused on the study of the African diaspora, the intellectual contributions of major African and African American scholars and cultural workers, and the crucial issues confronting peoples of African descent throughout the world. Black Studies faculty are committed to interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship and are engaged with the Harlem community and beyond. As a socially engaged department, Black Studies maintains a prominent and public facing platform with the Langston Hughes Festival, Black History Month, the 1969 Takeover Commemorations, and additional community and socially-engaged programming. As a newly reestablished Department at a Minority- and Hispanic-Serving Institution located in Harlem, the Department is committed to increasing the academic course offerings to grow the major, minor, and accelerated master’s degree.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a diverse student population while maintaining an active agenda of scholarship and participating in student mentoring, in departmental and college service activities in a large public university setting.

Set on a striking 35-acre hilltop campus in upper Manhattan, CCNY enrolls each year more than 16,000 students who pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture; the School of Education; the Grove School of Engineering; the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education; and the Colin T. Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications

• An individual who is firmly situated, trained, and credentialed in the field of Black Studies.
• Preference will be given to a faculty member in Urban Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Legal Studies, Economics, Political Science, or Architecture.

COMPENSATION

Up to $94,909. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
