Job Details

Assistant or Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies. The Department of Languages and Culture presently offers studies in American Sign Language, a minor in Native American/Hispano Cultural Studies, a B.A. and minor in Spanish and a Bachelor of University Studies. The Department invites applicants enthusiastic in building a high-quality applied university studies program with a focus on interdisciplinary workplace skills leading to career opportunities, particularly for workplace advancement. We are particularly interested in candidates that have demonstrated advising and mentoring of non traditional students, athletes, and rural students. This is a nine-month, position that will begin in fall 2026. Possibility of summer contract work.

Duties and Responsibilities

The selected candidate will teach 24 hours per academic year. The candidate teaches University Studies courses and per Collective Bargaining can apply for release time to direct the Bachelor of University Studies Program. The faculty provides vision and leadership for the program, particularly in communicating with students, faculty, staff, and administration the importance of a BUS degree, its objectives, and its requirements. The faculty serves as liaison to academic units throughout the University, including undergraduate student support units. The faculty advises prospective BUS majors; participates in recruitment activities, directs, and oversees the Bachelor of University Studies; provides mentorship to NMHU students; researches and implements the latest technologies for instruction. The faculty contributes to the scheduling of co-BUS activities and assessments; assesses BUS performance and maintains records of student majors served and generates annual reports; the faculty participates in department/university activities; maintains active research, teaching and service agenda; and performs other related duties as required. The faculty is required to have a visible presence on campus.

Qualifications

Ph. D in Community Development Studies, Leadership Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Spanish, Bilingual Education, Curriculum and Instruction with sub-specialization in any of the following: Ethnic Studies, Cultural Studies, Women and Gender Studies, or related fields.

Must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Training in interdisciplinary studies.
  • Experience in community engagement programming.
  • Experience with higher education program review, assessment, and reporting.
  • Interest and/or experience implementing curricula and/or pedagogy in various disciplines.
  • Direct experience overseeing a student advisement program.
  • Demonstrated experience working with non-traditional students, athletes, first generation students, students in rural communities.
  • Demonstrated experience in technology-based instruction at the college level.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to coordinate and facilitate efforts among a wide range of individuals and departments.
  • Grant writing experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to outreach to local, state, national organizations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to collaborate and engage with students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability, knowledge, and skill to teach both undergraduate and graduate level courses.
  • Knowledge of current job market trends.
  • Demonstrated planning, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with culturally diverse groups of people, including rural communities, non traditional students, and athletes.
  • Ability to do scholarly research and publication.
  • Able to teach using various delivery modes—on ground, asynchronous, synchronous, blended, hybrid.
  • Demonstrated ability to outreach to students and faculty across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide supportive advisement and mentorship to students.
