Assistant Teaching Professor, Music
Position Details
The Music Department within the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Tampa seeks a full-time, non-tenure-track position as an Assistant Teaching Professor of Music with experience in popular musics (broadly defined) of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries to begin in August 2026. The position is renewable and eligible for promotion.
The University of Tampa is a medium-sized, comprehensive, residentially-based private institution of more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The University is ideally situated on a beautiful 110-acre campus next to the Hillsborough River, adjacent to Tampa's dynamic central business district, which is a growing, vibrant, diverse metropolitan area. The primary responsibility of this position is to teach music humanities survey courses on popular styles (e.g. jazz, rock, pop, film music) to majors and non-majors, as well as a music-centered humanities class that includes a focus on reading and writing for the university's general education curriculum.
We seek a faculty member with a passion for teaching who will work to maintain and eventually expand the department's course offerings in popular musical styles. The successful candidate will also participate in departmental and college/university service and occasionally oversee senior capstone research (where appropriate). A master's degree in Music is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD (or ABD) in musicology, ethnomusicology, or related field
- Successful record of teaching at the college level
- Scholarly specialization in popular musics of the twentieth or twenty-first centuries, such as jazz, rock, pop, film/game music, etc.
- Experience teaching non-major music courses
- Experience teaching writing within a music curriculum
