The Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Dean of Students provides strategic leadership and oversight for student conduct, student advocacy, and campus life functions that promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. The Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students ensures institutional compliance, student accountability, and holistic student development consistent with Hampton University’s mission, values, and traditions.
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Management, the Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Dean of Students provides oversight for the Offices of Judicial Affairs, Student Involvement & Leadership, Student Center operations, and Residence Life and Housing. The AVP/Dean of Students will support the overall mission and vision of the Student Success and Enrollment Management Division and serve on university-wide committees.
Examples of Duties
- Provide leadership and oversight for the University’s student conduct system, ensuring fair, consistent, and developmentally appropriate adjudication of student behavioral matters.
- Oversee all judicial processes, including investigations, hearings, sanctions, appeals, and policy enforcement.
- Ensure policies are current, clearly articulated, and aligned with university values and best practices.
- Serve as or supervise conduct officers and hearing boards.
- Collaborate with campus partners on student cases, including behavioral intervention and crisis response.
- Assist with the annual review, revision, and publication of the Official Student Handbook.
- Communicate policy updates to students, faculty, staff, and parents as appropriate.
- Utilize StarRez for housing-related conduct, residential life coordination, and student engagement data.
- Serve as a key advocate for students navigating academic, personal, behavioral, or institutional challenges.
- Promote restorative practices and educational outcomes in student discipline.
- Develop policies, procedures, and training related to student conduct and community standards.
- Collect and analyze data and trends for reports, assessments, and recommendations for senior leadership.
- Support university initiatives related to student retention, persistence, and success.
- Conduct assessments and evaluations to determine effectiveness, and implement corrective action as required for improvement.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate staff.
- Serve as the after-hours and weekend contact for emergencies and manages Student Emergency Response protocol that pertain to students, residential housing, and campus life, which should be in line with the University Emergency Management Plan.
- Serve as systems administrator for StarRez, the housing software system and Maxient, the behavioral management system.
- Coordinate cross-divisional input from Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Legal Counsel, Compliance and other areas.
- Collaborate with Residence Life, Student Counseling Center, Health Center, Campus Police, Title IX, Academic Affairs and other areas.
- Serve on the Behavioral Health Intervention Team (BHIT), Crisis Management team and other university-wide committees

Typical Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education administration, with a focus on student affairs, student success, or student engagement.
- Demonstrated experience in Judicial Affairs / Student Conduct administration.
- Working knowledge and administrative oversight for Maxient, and StarRez systems.
- Strong understanding of FERPA, due process, Title IX guidelines and student development theory.
- Energetic and creative leader with demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
- Effective leader, manager and experience in conflict resolution
