The ideal candidate will have an outstanding scholarly record of human subjects research in digital health, broadly defined as the use of information and communication technologies to promote wellness; reduce health risks; detect, diagnose, monitor, and manage health conditions; enhance healthcare delivery; and improve quality of life. Digital health research may span the bench-to-bedside-to-community continuum. Technologies of interest are broad and may include electronic health records (EHRs), mobile health (mHealth) apps and digital therapeutics, wearables, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), public health surveillance systems, and virtual/augmented/extended reality. Health conditions of interest are also broad and may include chronic disease (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, dementias, pain conditions) and behavioral health (e.g., depression, substance use disorders, schizophrenia).
Example areas of interest for this position include but are not limited to:
- Telehealth and hybrid-care models to expand access, continuity, and care coordination
- mHealth and digital therapy for prevention, self-management, and treatment across the lifespan
- Digital behavioral health interventions integrated into primary and specialty care
- Wearables, sensors, or digital biomarkers for remote patient monitoring and early risk detection
- Clinical informatics solutions to identify high-risk patients in need of intervention
- EHR-enabled learning health systems to improve outcomes and quality
- Trustworthy and safe AI/ML in healthcare delivery and public health
- Virtual/augmented/extended reality for care delivery, clinician training, and patient education
- Precision digital health to personalize prevention and treatment
- Human-centered design, accessibility, and usability
- Implementation science, pragmatic trials, and real-world evidence to scale digital interventions in health systems and communities
- Public health informatics and biosurveillance using digital platforms
- Health economic, outcomes, and policy evaluations of digital health tools and services
The successful candidate will have a track record of high-impact peer-reviewed publications and extramurally-funded research as Principal Investigator (PI). Candidates leading externally funded research teams (with research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and/or research staff) are especially encouraged to apply.
This position is a strategic joint hire with the newly established IU Institute for Human Health and Wellbeing (H2W) at IU Indianapolis. The mission of H2W is to foster collaborative research at the intersection of health, life science, and technology to meet community needs and improve health outcomes in the State of Indiana. The creation of H2W, along with the construction of a new 50,000 sq ft state-of-the-art research building on the IU Indianapolis campus to house Institute faculty, was made possible by a record investment by the Indiana State Legislature (IU invests more than $250M to strengthen university’s, state’s leadership and impact in biosciences: IU News).
As an H2W investigator or fellow, the joint hire will have access to additional resources in support of their program of research, including seed funding for new projects, graduate student/postdoctoral training support, access to core facilities, research space in the new state-of-the-art research building, and opportunities to lead interdisciplinary research teams.
The primary appointment – in an appropriate department in the Fairbanks School of Public Health or the School of Science Department of Psychology – will be determined based on the successful candidate’s background. This is a research-intensive position. The candidate is expected to engage in interdisciplinary research and collaborative endeavors that transcend institutional silos to initiate and advance ambitious research initiatives at IU Indianapolis and within H2W. The candidate is also expected to contribute to translational research efforts that have a significant impact on the growing health, life, and technology ecosystem at IU Indianapolis. Some teaching in support of the educational mission of the primary Department/School is generally required, although the teaching load will be reduced to protect more time for research.
The successful candidate will interact with other IU centers/institutes (e.g., Center for Aging Research, Center for Bioethics, Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, Convergent Biosciences and Technology Institute, Indiana Alcohol Research Center, Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health, Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, Luddy Artificial Intelligence Center, Polis Center, Regenstrief Institute, and Stark Neurosciences Research Institute) and affiliated researchers. IU Indianapolis is home to the IU School of Medicine, the nation’s largest medical school, which received $243 million in NIH funding in 2023.
As the state’s premier urban research institution, IU Indianapolis seeks candidates committed to academic excellence whose research, teaching, and engagement foster welcoming and respectful learning and working environments for our students, staff, and faculty.
Review of applications will begin on or shortly after October 21, 2025. However, applications will be welcomed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
