Associate Lecturer - Archaeology in Roman Slavery
Birkbeck, University of London, School of Historical Studies, is recruiting a part-time Associate Lecturer to deliver lectures, seminars, site-visits, and associated assessment supervision and marking for a 30-credit, level 7 module timetabled for Thursday evenings 6-9pm, Spring term January - March 2026.
The module topics include:
- Approaching slavery in the Roman World
- Becoming Enslaved
- The Material Culture of Slavery 1: Confinement and Control
- The Material Culture of Slavery 2: Hidden Lives
- The Enslaved Body
- Slaving Landscapes
- Comparative approaches
- Slavery, Violence and Roman Imperialism
- Manumission and Freedmen
- Visualising Slavery
Candidates should have good knowledge of historiographical and theoretical debates in the archaeology of enslavement, Roman archaeology, and have completed or be near completion of a PhD. Some experience teaching a diverse group of students at postgraduate level is essential.
Essential requirements include:
- A PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate specialism or near completion.
- Teaching experience at undergraduate level.
- A good developing track record of research in the field.
- A good understanding of different teaching and learning methods and experience working with students from a range of backgrounds.
- Effective oral and written communication skills and good administrative skills.
Remuneration is based on an hourly rate of £68.13, inclusive of preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking, and other duties.
