Associate Lecturer in Mooting and Trial Skills

Are you looking for a teaching opportunity in Mooting and Trial Skills? Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Associate Lecturer to teach Autumn and Spring terms this coming academic year.

Birkbeck Law School is looking to recruit a part-time, fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach on the following module:

  • Mooting and Trial Skills LALW055H6
  • 3 hours per week
  • Wednesdays, 3:30-5pm and 6-7:30pm, in-person starting w/c 12 January 2026

You will have knowledge of legal practice pedagogy and experience of teaching undergraduate students on legal practice modules and be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience).

Further to the person specification, additional essential requirements for this role are:

  • Experience in advocacy training (public speaking, debate, presentations)
  • Understanding of legal practice skills
  • Interest in rhetoric

In addition, we would like the successful candidate to run the national moot competition for Birkbeck. This will involve an additional 15 hours spread out on Saturdays over the Autumn and Spring terms. The relevant dates are as follows:

  • 11 October 2025
  • 8 November 2025
  • 22 November 2025
  • 24 January 2026
  • 21 February 2026

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract:
