Position Summary

The Athletic Trainer provides high-quality, patient-centered care in a clinical setting by applying knowledge of injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. This role supports physicians and other healthcare providers in delivering safe and effective care, while promoting wellness and injury education to patients. The athletic trainer will also perform professional and administrative services essential for the successful implementation and development of the program. Oversee the scheduling of and communication with the participating Physicians while accommodating the needs of the athlete, parent, school, coach, clinic, and the physician. Participate in and implementation of educational courses in health care professions, with optional advancement in sports medicine and emergency care. Provide student athlete with appropriate health, nutrition, conditioning and fitness assistance and education.

Job Duties

  • Evaluates injuries in order to design and execute appropriate rehabilitation exercises.
  • Administers emergency care and makes medical referrals.
  • Assist physicians with patient care, including injury evaluation, treatment planning, and follow-up.
  • Provide rehabilitation services, including therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and modalities as directed.
  • Help patient accomplish treatment plan and accept therapeutic devices by administering manual exercises, instructing, encouraging, and assisting patients in performing physical activities, such as nonmanual exercises, ambulatory functional activities, and daily living activities and in using assistive and supportive devices, such as crutches, canes, and prostheses.
  • Designs and fabricates customized orthopedic devices and checks equipment in order to ensure safety and prevent injuries.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers on injury prevention, recovery, and safe return-to-activity strategies.
  • Document patient encounters, treatment plans, and progress in accordance with clinic standards and compliance regulations.
  • Maintain and prepare treatment areas, equipment, and supplies.
  • Support clinic flow by coordinating patient care, scheduling, and communication with the care team.
  • Participate in community outreach, wellness programs, or sports-related screenings as needed.
  • Stay current with best practices, continuing education, and licensure requirements.
  • Provides sideline and training room game coverage aa various high school sporting events to address acute injuries.
  • Act as liaison between family physicians and specialists, the school district, athletes and their parents.
  • Maintain accurate records of injuries, treatments and referral patterns.
  • Works with Patient Care Coordinator, Business Manager, and support staff to maintain a consistent schedule and adhere to requirements and limitations imposed by insurance companies to ensure compliance with regulations and financial viability.
  • Protects athletes and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Physical Education with relevant coursework in athletic training; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in all aspects of athletic training and administrative operations or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and certification by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA).

Desired Qualifications

  • BOC certified and licensed in the state of Michigan as an ATC.
  • BLS/healthcare provider certified.
  • One or two years of related experience of post- bachelor degree work in all aspects of athletic training.
  • Previous supervisor experience

The job requires significant physical effort and involves demonstrating exercises or body mechanics, assisting with exercise programs and transferring patients up to 25% of the time.

Exposure to human blood, serum, and other body fluids; and materials covered under Universal Precautions; TB risk or work within three (3) feet of patients in a health care setting; wear a respirator.
