Job Overview
Hoxworth Blood Center (HBC), University of Cincinnati, was founded in 1938 and serves more than 30 hospitals in 18 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeastern Indiana. Annually, Hoxworth collects more than 100,000 units of blood from local donors to help save the lives of patients in area hospitals. HBC is located within the College of Medicine and is the only Regional Blood Center owned and operated by a University in United States.
The University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine, Hoxworth Blood Center, Components Manufacturing Laboratory, is seeking several Blood Bank Technicians for second and third shift opportunities. Technicians will perform complex laboratory procedures that include preparation of red blood cells platelet concentrates, plasma, and cryoprecipitate; leukocyte reduction; irradiation; freezing and deglycerolizing; preparation of specialized hospital blood products, and processing and shipping samples to testing laboratory. The candidate must successfully complete an extensive FBI background check as a condition for employment. New hires will be trained on first shift, then assigned to their respective shift following successful completion of training.
STARTING WAGE: $21.57 per hour, Shift differential pay is available!

Essential Functions
- Prepare component products for transfusion (i.e., red blood cells, washed red blood cells, frozen red blood cells, deglycerolized red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, recovered plasma, cryoprecipitate, and source leukocytes and blood salvage).
- Label products (i.e. Red Blood Cells, Fresh Frozen Plasma, Cryoprecipitate and Apheresis Platelets) for transfusion and dispose of unusable units.
- Assist with instruction/training of students, new employees, residents, etc.
- Evaluate acceptability of incoming donor specimens and perform electronic data entry related to sample preparation for blood bank testing.
- Retrieve, interpret, and update blood product inventory data.
- Prepare pooled cryoprecipitate.
- Process incoming specimens; order issue and/or release blood components.
- Perform quality control checks on selected equipment.
- Communicate appropriate information to individuals internal, as well as external, to the department.
- Maintain a safe and clean work area.
- Monitor inventory of supplies and reagents.

Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree. Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
