Position Summary

The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of technical support staff and Pathologist Assistants. Process paperwork for new hires, probationary forms, annual reviews, disciplinary letters and promotions; this also includes job postings, interviews and candidate selection. Training of support staff, pathologist's assistants and residents in the gross room; this also includes developing existing staff to allow for employee personal growth and cross training to help distribute workload when there is a staff shortage. Update policy and procedure manuals including writing new procedures as required by regulatory agencies. This also requires one to be aware of the new and revised regulations required by CAP, JACHO, OSHA, NYS etc. Tracking and handling of problems cases; submission of stats of problem cases and resolutions to QA on a quarterly basis. Interface with other departments and medical centers to accomplish various tasks such as housekeeping, maintenance, locksmith, security etc.

Surgical Pathology: Assisting in the preparation and performance of surgical specimen dissection by ensuring appropriate specimen accessioning; obtaining pertinent clinical information and studies; describing gross anatomic features; dissecting surgical specimens; preparing and submitting tissue for histologic processing; obtaining and submitting specimens for additional analytic procedures (immunostaining, flow cytometry, image analysis, bacterial and viral cultures, etc.) and assisting in photographing gross specimens.

Autopsy Pathology: Assisting in the performance of postmortem examination by ascertaining proper legal authorization; obtaining the patient's chart and other pertinent clinical data and studies; notifying involved personnel of all special procedures and techniques required; coordinating special requests for specimens; notifying involved clinicians and appropriate authorities and individuals; assisting in the postmortem examination; obtaining and submitting specimens for additional analytic procedures (immunostaining, flow cytometry, image analysis, bacterial and viral cultures, etc.) and assisting in photographing gross specimens. Assist and organize materials for teaching.

Responsible for assisting pathology residents, training pathologist's assistant students and pathology support staff and rotating medical student sin the proper techniques of post-mortem examinations in accordance with established policies and procedures. Responsible for maintaining the autopsy suite, acquiring necessary supplies, and cleaning and disinfection of autopsy equipment as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • 40% - Supervision and raining of support staff, pathologist's assistants and residents in the gross room; this also includes developing existing staff to allow for employee personal growth and cross training to help distribute workload when there is a staff shortage.
  • 40% - Assisting in the preparation and performance of surgical specimen dissection by ensuring appropriate specimen accessioning; obtaining pertinent clinical information and studies; describing gross anatomic features; dissecting surgical specimens; preparing and submitting tissue for histologic processing; obtaining and submitting specimens for additional analytic procedures (immunostaining, flow cytometry, image analysis, bacterial and viral cultures, etc.) and assisting in photographing gross specimens.
  • 15% - Establishing, applying and enforcing policies and procedures in accordance with all institutional and laboratory regulatory agencies.
  • 5% - Other duties necessary for the operation of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience required and 4 years related experience. Pathologist Assistant License or must be New York State License eligible.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Copath or a similar laboratory computer system is preferred. Graduate from an accredited Pathologist's Assistant training program or a Fellow of the American Association of Pathologist's Assistants (AAPA) preferred.

Other Requirements

Must exercise independent judgement with respect to evaluation, fixation, freezing and preparation of specimens for light microscopic evaluation and other special studies. Must demonstrate solid communication, interpersonal and writing skills.
