Clinical Nursing Instructor (Part-Time)

The Clinical Nursing Instructor Adjunct provides quality educational experiences to help nursing students learn to safely care for clients through utilizing the nursing process and developing effective clinical judgment skills within the clinical, laboratory, and simulation settings. This position is responsible for supervising students within these settings while teaching, reinforcing, and evaluating knowledge, skills, and abilities for satisfactory completion of specific course and program objectives.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides instruction and supervises the performance of nursing students in the clinical/lab/simulation setting under the general direction of the Director of Nursing/Associate Dean of Nursing, Course Coordinator or Lead Instructor.
  • Facilitate learning by assisting students in translating didactic content and nursing theory into safe client care in the clinical setting.
  • Evaluates student performance and makes recommendations regarding students grades for clinical/lab/simulation experiences based on course/program criteria.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance and maintain other records according to program needs.
  • Demonstrates commitment to students' achievement of curriculum objectives and outcomes.
  • Role models and exhibits professionalism, ethical behavior, honesty, and integrity.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive environment and professional relationship with students, faculty, staff, and facility personnel.
  • Travel to assigned clinical locations and maneuver effectively within the assigned clinical environment to safely monitor students and care for clients.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to use technology and to perform work duties using relevant software and integrating technology in instruction and client care.
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, speaking, writing).
  • Strong human relations and interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and perform with a high level of personal and professional integrity and ethics.
  • Work cooperatively with agencies, faculty, students, staff, and administrators.
  • Make safe and effective decisions during clinical rotations and in high stress situations.
  • Adaptability to provide clinical instruction in a variety of clinical settings.
  • Motivate and encourage students to achieve set standards to the best of their abilities.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to meet the Technical Standards for Nursing and other health requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Guide and facilitate learning experiences through knowledge, skills, and motivation.
  • Remain up to date on discipline specific and instructional technologies.
  • Maintain skill proficiency and assume responsibility for instruction of determined clinical and skill lab content utilizing current best practices.
  • Demonstrate competence in the knowledge and practice of nursing within the clinical/lab settings, along with competence of facilitating learning for students in the same environments.
  • Prepare for clinical experience as evidenced by familiarity with unit policies, clients and their needs, students' clinical outcomes, and students' needs.
  • Provide orientation, assistance, and guidance to students during the clinical experience.
  • Remain with assigned students throughout the entire clinical experience, including hospital in-service programs, or other 'off-unit' assignments.
  • Conduct pre- and post- conference with students according to course/clinical outcomes.
  • Utilize approved assessment forms and clinical evaluation criteria/tools according to instructions given to provide continuity and consistency for students.
  • Complete evaluation tools for each student and schedules individual conferences at least mid-course and at the end of the course to discuss prepared summative evaluation of clinical performance.
  • Grades written assignments and offers constructive feedback in a timely and consistent manner based on outlined criteria by the course coordinator or lead instructor.
  • Evaluate student performance fairly based on course/program criteria and share ongoing evaluation assessments with student and course coordinator or lead instructor in a timely and constructive manner.
  • Maintain accurate student/course records and submit records in a timely manner (attendance sheets, student clinical record, skills checklist, etc.).
  • Maintain professional boundaries to include not stepping outside the role of clinical faculty and functioning within the scope of an adjunct faculty member at assigned clinical facility.
  • Attend faculty meetings and course meetings as required.
  • Complete clinical hours as designated by course coordinator and clinical facility.
  • Notify specified person (e.g. Course Coordinator, Lead Instructor, Director of Nursing) of illness, emergency, or anticipated absence as early as such absence is known.
  • Work schedule and location will be determined each semester based on program needs.
