Persons employed in the title of CLIP Instructor shall be assigned to teach and perform related functions as part of the CUNY Language Immersion Program. CLIP Instructors are full-time, non-tenure track positions subject to annual reappointments.
CLIP is an intensive English language program for immigrant students who have been accepted to CUNY and who need to increase their academic English language proficiency in preparation for college classes. CLIP uses a sustained content-based approach with coursework centered on a theme and core texts. Instruction is designed to increase students’ English language skills as they broaden their overall background knowledge in topics that will prepare them for general education courses at CUNY. Classes meet 25 hours a week in day and evening sessions. Classes are offered either fully in-person or hybrid.
CLIP is operated collaboratively by the CUNY Office of Academic Affairs and nine participating CUNY colleges. CLIP Instructors can be assigned to teach at any of the participating colleges in order to meet program needs.
Reporting to the Director of Education Programs in the Division of Continuing Education, the CLIP Instructor will be expected to:
- Provide 25 hours of instruction a week in academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking to a class of approximately 25 students.
- Integrate instruction in academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking with instruction in level-appropriate academic content in a sustained content-based curriculum.
- Use an active learning, student-centered approach with frequent peer-peer and peer-instructor interaction.
- Provide written and oral feedback on content development as well as linguistic components of student work.
- Fulfill a portion of the 25 instructional hours and duties remotely using a mix of synchronous and asynchronous instruction in alignment with program guidelines, if assigned a hybrid or remote class schedule.
- Maintain student records.
- Participate in ongoing trainings in CLIP instructional approaches and the implementation of a CLIP curriculum.
- Participate in instruction-related program support activities, such as scoring of program-wide exams and class placement.
- Collaborate in activities that foster continuous program improvement and development.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
CLIP classes typically meet for day sessions from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and for evening sessions from 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Instructors are assigned to teach in day or evening sessions based on program needs. Flexibility to teach day or evening classes is expected.
