Collection Management and Outreach Assistant
Position Details
Under the supervision of the Special Collections Librarian for Teaching and Scholarly Engagement, maintains the storage areas for rare book, archival, and manuscript materials, coordinates the re-shelving of all special collections materials; updates stacks guides and signage as needed; and alerts staff to potential risks to materials. Coordinates promotional/outreach efforts related to the collections. Serves as the primary liaison with Facilities Operations & Management for Rauner Library building maintenance issues.
This is a fully on-site, part-time position working 20 hours/week.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 1+ years of related experience
- Experience scheduling and coordinating activities and events
- Strong public services commitment
- Demonstrated attention to detail
- Excellent organizational, project management, writing, and editing skills
- Ability to work discreetly with sensitive or confidential materials
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to collaborate creatively with internal colleagues and external partners to meet mutual goals
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a public services environment
- Some aptitude with social media (or interest in learning more about social media)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with rare or fragile materials
- Library experience
- Experience with image editing and manipulation software (e.g., PhotoShop, Canva)
Key Accountabilities
- Maintains collections areas for Special Collections by coordinating the shelving and reshelving of all materials, shelf labeling, and shifting materials to accommodate the collections as needed. Regularly updates stacks guides to reflect the most current locations or printed materials and supervises a student employee who works 6-8 hours per week. (35%)
- Provides reference service in the Special Collections reading room to a diverse community of users, with primary focus on the research and instructional needs of the Dartmouth community. (20%)
- In coordination with the Libraries Exhibits Designer and the Libraries Communications Manager, organizes and coordinates promotional and outreach efforts related to the collections including social media posts, exhibits management, and public events. (20%)
- Liaises with the Libraries’ Manager of Building Operations & Security and Dartmouth Facilities, Operations, & Management staff about maintenance issues related to Rauner Special Collections Library’s physical space. (15%)
- Collaborates with the Assistant Archivist for Collections and Acquisitions and the Conservation department concerning the care and preservation of special collections materials. (5%)
- Actively engages in ongoing professional development to stay current with trends and issues affecting this position’s duties and for professional growth in new areas of need and interest. (5%)
- Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
