Reference Librarian
California Western School of Law is seeking an energetic, professional Law Librarian to join our Reference and Access Services Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive reference services, developing user guides such as LibGuides, and supporting the research needs of students, faculty, and staff.
The library houses 466 student seats on four floors with over 36,000 square feet of space. The collection contains all major databases, and a substantial print collection consisting of over 60,000 monographs and 22,000 serials.
Primary Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Provide in-depth, high-quality reference and research assistance to students, faculty, and staff.
- Conduct legal research using a variety of resources, including online databases, print materials, and other reference tools.
- Assist other authorized patrons, including members of the bench and bar, with locating and using library resources.
- Develop and maintain user guides, including LibGuides, to support legal research and library services. Ensure that all guides are up-to-date, accurate, and accessible.
- Collaborate with faculty and other librarians to create specialized guides tailored to specific courses with scholarly writing requirements.
- Participate in 1L student orientation and other instructional sessions on legal research methods and the use of library resources.
- Develop training materials to enhance library research skills, including those needed for efficient use of legal databases such as Lexis, Westlaw, CEB Onlaw, and HeinOnLine.
- Provide one-on-one research consultations at the Reference Desk and provide assistance to patrons at the Circulation Desk when requested to do so.
- Assist in the selection and acquisition of new library materials, including books, journals, and electronic resources.
- Evaluate and recommend resources to support the curriculum and research needs of the law school community.
- Participate in collection development meetings and contribute to our Collection Development Policy.
Qualifications:
- This position requires a Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA approved school and a Master of Arts in Information Resources and Library Science (MLIS) or equivalent MLS degree from an ALA accredited program.
- Participation in teaching rotation for a 3-unit Advanced Legal Research course is strongly encouraged.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills are required.
Compensation:
$75,000.00 - $85,000 Annual Salary. Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the law school reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the law school anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity and budget.
