Scope of Job: Provides strategic management and leadership, including developing and implementing a vision for multiple libraries distributed across multiple campuses in collaboration with other academic and health units and in support of the mission of the University.
- Provides management and leadership for all aspects of library services, including, but not limited to, supervision of personnel, facilities, financial planning, academic services, public service, collection development, acquisition, and special collection functions.
- Maintains fiscal responsibility for all library budgets, expenditures, and inventories; develops strategic funding proposals; forecasts new and changing requirements.
- Prepares annual strategic plan, action plans, assessments, and other reports in a timely manner, that are necessary to position the library to support UTRGV's goal of becoming an R1 institution.
- Identifies emerging library technologies and integrates them as applicable into library services.
- Provides visionary leadership for its health-focused libraries, including the implementation of medical library practices and procedures.
- Provides planning and oversight for the curation, traditional and print collections.
- Plans, forecasts, and ensures effective library services organizational structure, including allocation of staff and formulation of decision-making groups and committees.
- Develops and implements policies, procedures and programs.
- Responsible for the protection and safe-keeping of confidential data acquired during the course of work.
- Develops strategic relationships and partnerships with faculty, students, and staff across the university.
- Collaborates with the VP for Advancement, identifying funding sources and developing proposals for funding opportunities to further the library's vision.
- Ensures integration of the library's information literacy instruction across the in-class, hybrid, and online curriculum.
- Collaborates with peers at the regional, state, and national level; represents the University at local, regional, and national meetings.
- Ensures continuous assessment of all library services.
- Negotiates vendor contracts, manages licenses, and ensures contract requirements are met by the library and by vendors in accordance with UTRGV procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received: General supervision from assigned supervisor.
Supervision Given: Direct supervision of all assigned staff.
Required Education: Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited library school.
Preferred Education: Doctoral degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited library school.
Licenses/Certifications: None.
Required Experience: Seven (7) years of professional library experience in a senior managerial leadership role in an academic library, including experience in developing and administering a comprehensive budget.
Preferred Experience: Ten (10) years of professional library experience, including administrative experience in an academic medical library. Administrative experience within UTRGV's library or a University of Texas System library is preferred.
Equipment: Use of standard office equipment.
Working Conditions: Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required.
Other: Strong commitment to customer service and institutional advancement. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a diverse and multi-cultural student body and staff.
