What You'll Do and Who We Are Looking For
The Corrections Education Department is seeking a Computer Lab and Tutoring Coordinator. This role is full-time and is located at the Columbia River Correctional Institution. The Computer Lab and Tutoring Coordinator works independently to evaluate the instructional needs of students, assign appropriate subject areas using education software (i.e. Aztec), work with students individually and in groups, and monitors student progress, assigning new subject areas as needed. As students progress through the program, the position collaborates frequently with Department of Corrections staff, officers, and counselors in order to balance the competing demands on the time and energy of the adults in custody (AICs). Another important component to the position is the recruiting, training, supervising, and mentoring of inmate peer-tutors assigned to ABE/GED students. There is ongoing collaboration with tutors and the Computer Lab and Tutoring Coordinator regarding lesson planning, educational strategies, educational resources and the readiness of students to test (both CASAS and GED.)
Computer Lab Duties:
- Conduct adult in custody student program in a correctional facility.
- Schedule and coordinate student activities in the computer lab.
- Assist students in the use of computer hardware and software.
- Administer education software (Aztec, Reading Horizons, etc...).
- Maintain student attendance and progress records.
- Coordinate the maintenance of the lab computers and software.
- Cultivate student persistence in computer lab classes and activities.
- Record student progress reports for reporting purposes.
Tutor Program Duties:
- Recruit, interview, train and manage inmate tutors and clerks.
- Conduct quarterly reviews of tutor program with inmates and staff.
- Supervise the scheduling of 60 students and 12 tutors.
- Review, select, and update curriculum used by tutors.
- Conduct regular meetings to facilitate efficient communication and coordination of work efforts among inmate tutors and staff.
- Work closely with the Education Coordinator, Director, and Testing Assistant to ensure effective pursuit of organizational objectives.
- Handle disciplinary issues among inmate workers and students.
Location: Columbia River Correctional Institution is a 595-bed minimum security prison located in NE Portland. The institution opened in September, 1990, and houses 595 male inmates in separate dormitory-style housing units. This is a minimum security correctional facility with restricted access; no cellphones; pagers; or other personal electronic equipment are allowed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Positions in this classification typically require a blend of administrative experience, including expertise with technological resources, and experience or training related to the program or service to which assigned. A typical way to meet these requirements would be:
Associate's degree or equivalent units and two years of responsible experience related to the program area of assignment.
Experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Success Criteria:
- Corrections experience or other experience that demonstrates the ability to maintain healthy boundaries, guard against manipulation, and uphold security practices.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully work self-directed as well as collaborate with stakeholders.
- Successful experience motivating a team and holding them accountable to objectives.
- Experience working with adult learners, including motivation and re-directing resistance.

How We Determine Initial Salary Placement
The first two steps of the range are: $58,180 to $59,923 per year. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.
