EMT Lab Assistant/Learning Specialist (Part-time Evenings)

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will join a vibrant educational community and have a desire and ability to serve a population of students with various needs and backgrounds. This is a part-time, non-unit position with no benefits.

MassBay Community College seeks qualified part time Lab Assistants in our EMT courses. The Emergency Medical Services Lab Assistant assists in the laboratory and simulation setting in the Emergency Medical Technician Program. Our Lab Assistants have obtained and maintain current, unrestricted, and appropriate state and national certification and/or licensure where applicable and have earned appropriate education. These certifications and licensures must be provided, as requested, to meet state and national accreditation requirements. The Learning Specialists must be proficient in all areas of prehospital patient management and interventions, communicate effectively, assess students objectively and work as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide instruction in EMT courses to students on various topics in basic emergency care procedures and patient management;
  • Supervise and/or evaluate students through skills practice in the proper procedures for safe and effective use of EMS equipment and simulation manikins under the direction of the Instructor/Coordinator or lead instructor;
  • Coordinate and facilitate groups of students and supervise open lab, as needed;
  • Maintain current working knowledge of prehospital practices;
  • A good working knowledge of the EMS curriculum and teaching methodology;
  • Maintain appropriate paperwork and documentation;
  • Collaborate with the lead instructor and other lab assistants concerning students' academic progress and needs;
  • Prepare EMT lab sessions with the appropriate materials and equipment necessary to effectively teach or evaluate EMT skills for each student under the direction of the Instructor/Coordinator or lead instructor;
  • Maintain a safe lab environment during skills training and evaluation sessions;
  • Must attend at least one department meeting each semester;
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned by the Dean consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • MA EMT certification in good standing with no history of suspension or revocation;
  • Current AHA BLS certification;
  • Three (3) years of experience as an EMT functioning on an ambulance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sensitivity and commitment to the goals of Affirmative Action;
  • Experience working in a community college or similar environment;
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with students in need;
  • Current AHA BLS instructor credentials;
  • Current MA Instructor Coordinator License;
  • Experience working with college students in a flexible setting.

Times/Days:

  • Times and days vary depending on the semester;
  • Must be able to commit to 4-8 hours weekly during the semesters;
  • This will be an evening position from 6p-10p for spring and fall semesters and a day position from 8a-2p during the summer semester;
  • The EMT program enrolls students in the fall, spring and summer.

Additional Information:

Salary Range: $42 per hour

Classification: Part-time, MCCC

Source of Funding: Grant-Funded
