Organizational Unit Overview:

The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in facilities located in Greenville, North Carolina and throughout North Carolina. Hospital Dentistry provides comprehensive and acute dental care to medically complex patients in our hospital office. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties:

The purpose of this position is to provide clinical support to the dentist, dental residents in the School of Dental Medicine Hospital Dentistry clinic located in the ECU Health Medical Center. The dental assistant is responsible for patient preparation and patient flow and to assist in 4-handed dentistry. Working in this position you will have access to protect patient information, including access to and from the dental operatory and obtains and records patient blood pressure, pulse, temperature. The assistant participates in dental exams charting existing restorations, periodontal probing depths, and dental decay and supports the dental providers during dental procedures. The assistant follows OSHA standards for hand washing, masking, gloving and disposal of contaminants. The assistant monitors patients as they are receiving treatment. The assistant acquires single image dental x-rays ordered by the dentist and panoramic and cone beam images as needed. The dental assistant is responsible for restocking dental operatory with supplies and equipment to ensure dental care can be provided. The dental assistant is responsible for processing and sterilizing dental equipment and supplies. The dental assistant is responsible for ordering dental supplies and to perform other duties as directed by the dentist supervisor.

DENTAL MEDICINE SUPPORT POSITION - NOT SUBJECT TO STATE HUMAN RESOURCES ACT.

Minimum Education/Experience:

High school diploma or equivalency and completion of an accredited dental assisting program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

None

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

CPR certificate, Radiology certified, Spanish speaking
